We had the good fortune of connecting with Dina Grishin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dina, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Really good question. I coach 9-5ers and the self-employed and the answer is different for those two groups. If you’re in a job and wondering whether to go or stay, then it’s safe to say that you’re having your doubts about your future at that company. As soon as one seed of doubt lodges into your mind, it won’t go away until you resolve that indecision. In fact, it will only continue to grow until you find yourself going crazy from going round in circles in your mind about whether you should stay or leave.
If you’re in that boat, then my advice would be to dissect the doubt. That doubt is your gut feeling telling you something.
Your mind will try to ignore it or placate it with thoughts such as “It’s not that bad. I should be grateful for having a secure job right now. There are so many lay offs happening at the moment that it’s probably really competitive out there so now is not a good time to jump ship.”
The thoughts sound true and believable, but your mind doesn’t like change, so it will fight to keep the status quo.
You need to listen to your gut, because it’s telling you something important. Once you know what the source of the doubt is, you’ll know if you can resolve it by staying, or if it’s unresolvable and you should leave.

If you’re self-employed, it’s a different story. You may be wanting to give up on your business because it’s not making enough money, because you’re burning out or because you’re not enjoying it anymore.
All three of those problems can be solved. You can get a part-time job, freelance or do consultancy to get some money in the bank. If you’re burning out, then see if you can pare back or hire out to give you a breather. If you’re not enjoying it any more – analyse that a bit more. When did you stop feeling fulfilled? Was there something to cause that sudden shift? Can you restructure your business so you’re doing more of the things you love and less of the things that drain you?
If you have your own business, then you’ve likely poured in a lot of time, energy, money and love into it. So don’t give up on it. Do something to solve the immediate problem so you can take a step back, have a breather and see if you can make some changes to it. After all, you’re the boss. You can, and should, change your business to fit you.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I just created my very first virtual summit! It was a Career Change Summit lasting 4 days, with 18 speakers and 343 attendees from over 18 countries. I’m very proud of that because it hasn’t been done before and it went better than I could have imagined.
The inspiration came because of two things:
1) I know there are a lot of things that career changers don’t think to think about when changing careers. They wouldn’t even know to Google it, so I thought I’d raise their awareness on a few of those things.
2) I’ve been in the personal development and coaching space for a while now and I know so many talented experts that career changers may not know about, so I wanted to shine a light on them.

So with point 1 – Career changers are often stuck or lack clarity on the next step and they think that browsing a job board will help. But in reality, there are many different things that could help them. It could be therapy, it could be spirituality, or discovering what nervous system regulation is, or it could be hearing about the concept of being a ‘multi-potentialite’ or ‘generalist’ that helps them get that lightbulb moment. So I carefully curated the talks to make sure none overlapped, that there would be diverse perspectives represented and there would be something for everyone.
I’m thrilled with how it went and I’m already planning to do another one next January, so keep in contact to make sure you don’t miss it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Castle Combe in Wiltshire in the UK is the most picturesque little village. It hasn’t had a new building built since the 1600s, so it’s this perfectly preserved slice of history. So much so that Steven Spielberg shot War Horse there.

I would spend the weekend near there and do the following:
– Visit Castle Combe first thing before the tourists come
– Big breakfast at Allington FarmShop Cafe
– Visit Avebury (a National Trust nearby that has a henge and a fantastic manor)
– Early dinner at a local pub (I recommend The Salutation Inn)
– Next day: long walk in the Westonbirt Arboretum

I would recommend doing this in October/ November as the Arboretum’s colours really come alive in autumn.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family. My dad, George Grishin, for being a role model. He created his own company and his own role and showed me that it was possible to create your own dream job. Him and a lot of my other family members – aunties, uncles, grandparents, also influenced me as a kid by showing me what a calling was. They loved, and I mean LOVED, their specialities and their fields (they were doctors and engineers). There was no corporate mask you put on to go to work. They were truly invested and interested in what they were doing. Their careers allowed them to grow personally and professionally. So seeing that when I was growing up, meant that I had high standards for work. I didn’t settle for a job. I wanted to find my calling. And I’m so glad I did because it brought me to this work – I love coaching and I love my job.
