Meet Dray Bullard | Owner/ operator/ artist at Blak Flag tattoo collective

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dray Bullard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dray, how do you think about risk?
I have been an avid rock climber for about 30 years now. This risk involved there is relatively high. I have taken a few risks in the past several years now professionally, such as deciding to be a tattoo artist at the age of 39 and opening my own tattoo studio in a down economy. Being in many life or death situations over the years as a climber, makes me look at professional risks in a different light than maybe I would’ve without that skewed perspective on risk.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My style of tattooing is called “painterly realism.” My tattoos look like an oil painting of the skin. I have spent the majority of my career developing this style. My new studio, Blak Flag tattoo collective, was formed due to me wanting a better work environment for myself and the artists that work at my studio.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would tke them out to a few of my favorite area restaurants. We are lucky to have so many locally owned restaurants to go to. A few of my favorites are Teocalli and The Post. I might take them climbing in Eldorado canyon, BMX’ing at Brighton skatepark or paddleboarding at Standley Lake. I feel fortunate to live in a state with so many outdoor adventures so close by.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a few shout outs here. First and foremost, I would like to give a HUGE thank you to my partner, Erin Rodriguez, for all of her support and encouragement in my newest ventures. She has been a rock for me and a true ride or die! I also want to give shoutouts to my coworkers, Josh Bownan and Katie Ziegelman, who came to the new studio with me and have been so helpful in the entire process of opening and running a new tattoo studio.
