We had the good fortune of connecting with Drew Etherton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Drew, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I can’t imagine anyone has ever done something special or unique without taking on risk. Risk can come in many forms and levels. I have come to find that all risk comes with some form of sacrifice. For me one of the biggest risks I have taken, was letting go of a business I started at age 19 to pursue a career in one of my biggest passions at age 28. Travel and Videography. The sacrifice I chose, was to walk away from something I had spent years building. I sacrificed some big growth that was on the horizon just to start over at zero. But to me the riskiest thing of all was to continue working a job that I wasn’t crazy passionate about, and having the freedom to do that anywhere in the world. I guess in that sense I feel very lucky. Lucky to have that realization. I accepted the risk of making very little money in the beginning. That made me sacrifice many things that the people around me didn’t have to. Like purchasing a house, a nice car, having a nice apartment, buying cool things, etc. But I rarely find myself questioning it. If you have a vision and a clear path on how to reach it. The biggest risk is to stray from that.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love the idea of telling an underdog story. For example I am from Nebraska and it is well known for being a fly-over state. I know the state in a different way, so I have made a few videos of Nebraska through my eyes and showing real beauty and excitement that lies within the state. I love when people from Nebraska watch it, and are surprised that some of these things exist that they never knew about. I love the challenge of changing someone’s perception towards something.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A road trip around Nebraska for a week is amazing. Make sure to get out to western Nebraska. Start in the Scottsbluff area. Amazing scenery in Wild Cat Hills and nearby Scottsbluff National Monument. From there head up north to Crawford where you can take in the scenes of Fort Robinson State Park and Toadstool National Geologic Park. You’ll feel like you are on Mars. Make the drive to Valentine Nebraska where you can tube or kayak down the Niobrara River. There is amazing wildlife and scenes to check out there. Along with the biggest waterfall in the state. Now make the trek to the capital Lincoln for the weekend. Make sure the plan around a University of Nebraska home college football game. The sold out stadium would be the 3rd largest city in the state. Not to mention all the people outside still tailgating during and after the game. It’s a very unique experience that everyone should see. My favorite thing to do is to go out boating on a lake nearby. So make sure to make friends during the football game and maybe you’ll get invited out.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest supporter is for sure my dad. He will do anything to help me succeed in whatever it is I am doing. I can rely on him for anything. Him and I are complete opposites in so many ways. And while he may not understand why I do half the things I do, he is always there when I need him. I couldn’t do near the travel that I do without him. It’s not so easy to get a place to sleep for just a few months between trips. So, being able to stay with him has been a big reason why I can travel. Especially in the beginning when my bank account would go to $0 right as I am returning home. I am so very fortunate and grateful for him.
