We had the good fortune of connecting with Drew Wayne Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Drew Wayne, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Drew Wayne Roberts had the idea of putting together a production team after he and Madi Lyn worked together on his first horror production: Tunnels. Drew and Madi met at a horror movie trivia night hosted by Drew’s horror trivia troup: Ghoul’s Night Out. He and Brandon Scott had been talking about making horror movies for a while and when they met Madi, a special effects and make up artist, they had enough of a team to start making film. After successfully producing Tunnels, Madi and Drew decided to team up and start their own production company including live events and horror movies. The live events have helped tremendously with networking and outreach.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a fairly young production company, we want to first put focus on community building. There are a lot of talented horror film makers in this state and we want to bring them together and help grow the community. We are starting with short horror films and once we are more established, we would like to get into features and be able to independently produce and distribute our work.
A thing that sets us apart is that we are looking for film makers to be able to have creative control over their films. Artistic freedom is very important to us and we feel that when you give artists that freedom is when they truly shine.
Since we started last October, we have 3 finished projects with one premiere behind us and another tentatively scheduled for August. We are very super proud to be able to produce Gorehouse by Carmen Semenek, Tunnels by Brandon Scott, and Monster Smash by Andi Lynn.
We’ve gotten to where we are now with consistent networking and being willing to help other productions. Making friends and being willing to show up and help have been key in our continuing success. I wouldn’t say it’s been easy but it has been rewarding and very fun. Film making can be stressful! Consistency is key.
We’ve learned that filmmaking can be hard work but we do it for the final product and the premiere. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing your art brought to life in a crowd full of people who are excited to see what you’ve been working on.
We want the world to know that we are a place for independent horror film makers to get their start and make their dream projects come to life. Whether you’re an actor, writer, cinematographer, director, sound engineer, editor, or you just want to see what it’s like to work on a film set and you love horror movies. We are all horror movie fanatics who, at one time, dreamed about being part of the movie making process. Here’s your chance! Make movies with us!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are a few spots in town that are ideal hang out spots for lovers of the horror genre so we’ll go that route! I’d start by taking them to Slasher’s to check out the rad Michael Meyers mural on the side of the building then go in and grab a cocktail and watch a horror movie. Next, we’d need to hit up Rino and brewery hop to give them a taste of the craft beer industry in the city. On a Wednesday I would want to show them Ghoul’s Night Out Trivia at The Electric Cure and grab some amazing tiki drinks in a fun, eccentric environment. Then last night in town I’d take them to The Crypt to hang out and eat some good food and meet some cool locals.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out Andy Lynn who is the writer, director, and editor of our first series; Monster Smash. We’re excited to have her aboard with her unique, stylized vision and can’t wait to see what she puts out next!
