We had the good fortune of connecting with Dustin Doskocil and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dustin, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I was always drawn to the camera and would carry one around from the time I was 14 or 15. It wasn’t until my first photography class in college, when my instructor started talking about back when he was a professional photographer and I thought to myself, “that’s a career path”. From there I went on to take photography class after photography class picking up as much information as I could about the process and the business while obtaining a degree in Advertising and Fashion Photography.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One thing that sets me apart from other photographers in my industry is that my clients can send me products and I will create a shoot around them and come back with images without having very much hands-on from the client. I choose a location, find athletes/models edit, and deliver the hi-res files. I started shooting while being a freelance photo assistant in Dallas. On the weekends and days off, I would take my kayak out with some of my buddies and photograph the doing what they do on the water while figuring out different angles and tricks to put up my sleeve while shooting from a kayak. This led to publication and assignments in different magazines and eventually led to me working B2B with adventure companies. It’s a long road, and persistence and timing are key.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d probably head out to one of the mountain reservoirs for a some kayak fishing then end up at Cross Cut Pizza in Ned.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
R.J. Hinkle has been and is my greatest mentor when it comes to photography. When I started assisting him around 12 years ago, he took me under his wing and has been a great friend and inspiration for what I do.
