We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Antoine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ebony, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I couldn’t imagine working the next 25+ years for only a paycheck. Life’s ups and downs made me understand how broken people are and how important healing is critical for families. I understood the injustices that black and brown people face, and I want to be a beacon of hope for families that have been broken by violence.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Broken by violence, is a nonprofit I created to help families heal after being impacted by gun violence. While on my personal healing journey, after Losing my husband Corry Rojas to gun violence I discovered there wasn’t many services nor were there any examples of families who were success stories who didn’t succumb to hopelessness, depression, or drugs. I needed a roadmap for recovery. It wasn’t easy, actually it was very difficult but understanding the need for healing in underserved communities keeps me going.
I built broken by violence purely on passion, however along the way I had to understand programming, fundraising, accounting, board development, ect.
I want the world to know that if we don’t take care of the less fortunate one day you will mourn the loss for someone you hold close to your heart because hurt people hurt people.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week long trip in the Bay Area would start in Oakland CA, let’s start with Lunch at Evertte and Jones BBQ. Next up let’s check out the new Chase Center for a Basketball game for musical entertainment. We would stay overnight to visit the San Francisco Zoo, Alcatraz, and Ocean Beach.
Next up we would head to Wine county, Napa California we would spend the day wine tasting, shopping, and relaxing with one of our premium spa experiences.
We would end our week back in Oakland at Yoshi’s for some Sushi and live music.. sounds like and eventful week in the Bay Area!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I give a shout out to my children, forgive me something to live for bigger than myself. Also want to give a shout out to Liz Jackson Simpson her believing in me made me believe in myself.
