Meet Elliot Lozier | Mandolinist and Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Elliot Lozier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elliot, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was scavenging around our house one day and came across an old mandolin. Id tinkered with mandolin a few years prior when my other band, We The Heathens, was still acoustic, but never learned how to actually play. So I played this old one a bit. I took this old mandolin with me everywhere and called it my garbage mandolin. It was a piece of garbage, it still is. In order for it to play you need to capo the first fret so none of the strings buzz. I took it to a luthier but the cost of the repairs would’ve been triple the amount the mandolin was actually worth. so I played it broken. I wrote everything on it because it was just so fun to play. At the time, the pandemic and a lot of political things were popping up around the world, and that fired my lyrical blade so to speak. So the band wasn’t really premeditated, rather it had fallen into my hands. in 2020 I sat down with my recording equipment and recorded the first album with my fiancé, Taylor. She plays the washboard and sings in the band as well. As we were recording the songs, our other members, P, Riz and Micah joined the group. They added some vocals to the recordings and that was that. A band that I had never imagined was born and we’ve been riding the Doom Scroll wave ever since.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been playing music since 2001. I honestly didn’t think that banging on the walls of my family home until my mom was fedup and bought me a drum set to play, would land me where I am today. It was not an easy road. Over the years ive learned how to play drums, guitar, piano, mandolin, bass, cello, and a little banjo. Ive produced, recorded, mixed and mastered albums. Ive drawn full album artworks as well as tshirt designs for bands. I’ve poured so much of my own money into all of my art. Ive been touring nationally since 2007. starting with my first band, Atrocity Solution, a skacore band based out of Wausau, WI. I moved to my next band We The Heathens in 2012. Between these 2 bands I toured around the world for the next 10 years. Since I started Doom Scroll in 2021, we’ve gone on a couple tours and got signed to a pretty big label by our buddy, Fat Mike who plays in a band called NOFX. The label is called Bottles to the Ground. I love music and I love creating it. Ive been writing songs as long as Ive been playing music and to hear how far ive come kind of baffles me sometimes. From audacity recordings with a computer microphone in my parents basement, to a polished new unreleased Doom Scroll EP that was mixed by Scot Stewart (Avril Lavigne, Machine Gun Kelly), the ride has been unreal and I hope to just keep going!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I moved to Colorado 5 years ago and I still don’t know the best places to go. Im kind of a hermit. But to name a couple, 7th circle music collective in Denver is a great venue for more underground shows. Bishops Castle in Rye, CO is an unbelievably awesome hand built castle in the mountains that is a must see. The Stanley Hotel up in Estes Park is remarkably eery.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The main person who pushes and supports me more than anyone is my fiancé Taylor. She’s a big reason Ive kept this going as long as it has.
The rest of the band are all shredders of musicians and tear up these songs better than I ever did on any recording. We wouldn’t be as far as we are without them.
Id love to shoutout to my parents for putting up with my noisy habit while I was growing up, I probably wouldn’t be here without the support they had for me
Id also like to shout out to some of my favorite bands that have been huge influences on my writing. Propagandhi, The Mars Volta and Fall of Efrafa to name a couple.
