We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Sloan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, what matters most to you?
The name I chose for my business might clue you in on this one…
Curiosity is a core value of mine in pretty much all areas of life. Personally, relationally, and professionally. I’m a curious person by nature (I think we all are actually), but I also strive to cultivate more curiosity-driven interactions. To use curiosity and wonder as the lens in which I see people and the world. I think it allows me to lean in with people. To approach people and situations with a beginner’s mind. Curiosity over judgment. I really want to understand more about what leads people to their beliefs + patterns, even when I don’t agree.
This has also been part of my own healing work. Approaching my patterns, beliefs, thoughts, and emotions from a place of curiosity instead of judgment, fear or shame. It’s been a game changer.
My intention with my therapy practice has been to create space for this kind of healing. A space for people to wonder, to learn + unlearn, to be gentler and kinder, to understand themselves more, to gain clarity + a new perspective, and to find what truly makes life worth living.
With curiosity as the framework, both individual and collective healing is possible.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sometimes, people have the misconception that therapy will be advice giving. People will come to me and say that they just want someone to tell them what to do. They’re stuck, frustrated, and at the end of their rope. But they don’t really want to be told what to do with their life. Not if they’re really honest with themselves. It can be tempting to think someone else holds the answers. That somehow the authority is outside. But that’s not how I approach my work with people. Because I don’t believe it’s true.
Instead, I help guide people back into themselves. Taking their big + confusing questions inside. Helping them to cultivate curiosity and re-access Self-trust. Sometimes, we just need permission to know what we already know. That’s how I see my role as a therapist. Guiding and encouraging people to take an active role in their own life. Validating and honoring that there are many reasons we lose connection with our intuition (hello trauma 👋🏼) AND we can find our way back. Like any journey worth taking, it might get a little (or a lot) bumpy along the way. For me though, it was a journey I couldn’t not take. And often, that’s what I see in others too. Immense gratitude for taking the bumpier path to Self-trust.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Nature is the spotlight for me. Getting away for some longer hikes is my favorite, but I can’t always make that happen, so I love finding nature spots inside the city. Two of my favorites are Sloan’s Lake and Confluence Park.
I love the vibe in Rino Arts District. I almost always stop for a tea latte at Crema and browse my favorite sexual boutique store, Awakening. Honey Elixir Bar is also a fun + unique spot to grab some cacao or other “potions”.
Any trip to Denver should also include an afternoon at Meow Wolf or checking out Spectra Art Space.
I’m a big tea person (and so are many of my friends) so if they’re in town, we’d definitely hit up Babe’s Tea Room. And if we’re staying in and grilling out, we’d have to get all the meat and grilling necessities from Western Daughter’s Butcher Shoppe.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Might sound a little odd, but I’m going to go with Elton John. I watched the biopic of his life back in the summer of 2019 and it became a catalyst for so much change + healing in my life. It was raw + beautiful. And I think a perfect example of how someone else’s story can spark something in us, even if we don’t fully understand it.
