We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Jordison and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emma, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
Around Mother’s Day, my oldest son’s preschool teacher asked them to share about their moms in an interview-type activity. I’m sure you’ve seen these many times shared on social media and the funny responses little ones come up with, like “my mom is 11” or “my mom’s favorite store is Target” .. which is promptly accurate.

But one of the questions on my son’s sheet was “What is your mom’s job?” And instead of saying “she sells homes” or “she shows people houses”.. he wrote.. “she plays with me.”

And this was probably the most confirming moment since making the decision to leave my steady, solid benefit packaged, reliable 9-5 job and launching my own Real Estate business. I hope when my children are older, they remember more of the time I spent with them than the time I didn’t- because I made a conscious choice to build a business that allowed me to be “mama” first.

What should our readers know about your business?
As a REALTOR® in the Des Moines surrounding area, being the local, trusted advisor and advocate for both lifelong residents and transplants is something I’ve always tried to remain in the reputation I’ve built in my business. A balance of educational tips and fun Instagram Reels covers my social media pages, hoping to let others in to my day to day serving homeowners and home buyers. In the early stages, it was hard to decide what was “me” and what was not. Imposter syndrome is really real in the entrepreneurial space. You have to be diligent in the tasks and activities that feel like you. I needed to try and learn what worked for my business and what felt like putting on sopping wet jeans (uncomfortable). My “brand” is pretty simple actually- your listening ear and friendly advice giver for all things real estate, who prioritizes the education process and making your buying or selling experience so positive you’d refer me to your closest friends and family.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh man, there’s so much to love about DSM. Truly. People ask.. “where’s Iowa? Do you grow potatoes there?” but honestly, Iowa is such a great gem I hope everyone experiences through travel or residency at some point in their lives. Iowa experiences all four seasons, but my favorite is summer. There are so many great patios, bike and walking trails, restaurants, and (a popular summer activity in our house) parks! A few of my can’t miss spots in Des Moines: The Downtown Farmer’s Market (a consistently ranked market in the U.S.!), drinks and a bite to eat on the Trailside Tap patio in Ankeny, and of course ending the day with ice cream at The Creamery in Polk City. Maybe fitting in a bike ride along the High Trestle Trail and stopping at a brewery.. or two along the way! Des Moines is just so fun. You have to come see.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many individuals who came and have come beside me to cheer me on, offer wisdom and cover us in prayers while we made this transition, but a few truly deserve recognition in print! First and foremost, this was a prayerful decision and I thank God for the timely direction and individuals He put in my path to encounter while we made this transition as a family as I launched my business. I say “we” because this is a whole family venture. My husband, Tyler, is the biggest cheerleader you’ll ever meet. He loves to know other’s ambitions, passions.. what brings “more life” to their day to day. When I first proposed this idea, he was all in without knowing all the details or seeing the full staircase. He didn’t need to, because his faith and trust that we’d ‘figure it out’ is just that big. The countless text threads, Zoom calls and coffee dates in community with two of the most earth-shaking individuals I know.. Heather Johnson and Anna DeHammer- powerhouses in their own entrepreneurial roles and living out the gifts and passions God ignited in them. And of course.. my family. Whether it’s been jumping in to help with our two little boys or just sharing an encouraging word. Truly behind me is quite a force that I’d never have gotten to where I am today without.
