We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emma, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Emm Co was originally started in 2021 to help people gain build connections and friendships. Most of the events that I’ve hosted have been social cooking classes, but I’ve since branched out to incorporate joy, art, and women’s events into the mix. Today, the focus of Emm Co has transitioned into helping people find joy in their life – whether that’s through new hobbies, having better friendships, or by experiencing life like a kid again through unique experiences.
Over the last few years, I was struggling with being too serious and just going through the motions of the day-to-day. Have you ever found yourself not enjoying life, disconnected from social activities, and feeling like the present moment doesn’t matter? I still have days like this.
This all led me to realize that finding joy, even in the gloomiest of days, takes intention and getting out of my comfort zone. The smallest of joy activities has a significant shift on my mood, and know that it can for others as well. For these reasons, I want to help others incorporate steps and experiences into their own lives to rediscover happiness and build human connection.
My Instagram page, @emmcoexperiences, is dedicated to these concepts and hopefully serves as an inspiration to adding in joyful experiences into your own daily life.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The mission of Emm Co. is to help people find joy in their life through new experiences and building better community around them. This focus brings a uniqueness to the events that I host, and it’s never the same. What I’ve learned is that participants love the opportunity to meet new connections, learning skills from a community expert, and the casual format of each experience. I started this business is 2021, and it has been a rewarding and interesting experience. I also have a freelance business with a few long-term clients, but Emm Co is definitely where my heart is. As I continue to host events and see what people enjoy the most, I’m grateful to have freelance clients that are fun to work with and help me to fund my dream.
One of the most challenging aspects of the Emm Co events business has been getting the word out about upcoming experiences. Networking and partnering with other members of the community has brought me the most success.
The most important thing I’ve been learning in this entrepreneurial journey is that I need to live life with joy and to have fulfilling relationships. More specifically, practicing what I preach and being a good example of having adventures and enjoying the present moment to the fullest. When I get bogged down in the serious work of running a business, I can forget about looking for happiness in simple things. I know that if I’m living well, then I can better help others to find fun and joy in their own lives.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite places in Colorado Springs are the trails in Cheyenne Canon area, Seven Bridges, and Red Rocks Open Space. These are best to do earlier in the day on weekdays since less people are around. For drinks, I would take them to Mash Mechanix, Cerberus, and Goat Patch Breweries, Shuga’s and Chiba Hut for cocktails. Red Leg Brewery has a fun outdoors space, too. For food, I enjoy more unique options, so we’d be going to El Rey Del Taco, Dainty’s Kitchen, La Baguette, Monse’s Pupuseria, and Leon Gessi Pizzeria.
I think the Pioneers Museum, Old Colorado City, and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo are fun to visit. I’ve always wanted to do a mountain jeep tour and the ghost tour in Cave of the Winds, so I would drag them along for that as well!
Other must-see places in the area in my opinion are Manitou Springs, and Victor Vindicator Mines Trail, and 11-Mile State Park.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thanks to the countless mentors and entrepreneurial friends who have supported me along the way! Also a big thanks to all the community members who have used their skills to teach during the Social Cooking Classes. And of course, anyone who has participated in an Emm Co. event – thank you for putting your trust in me to bring you a unique experience.
