We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Faber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evan, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Art elevates the human experience. It can divide or unite us. It can inspire, comfort, or disturb. Creative expression can compel a mob to action. It’s activism, propaganda, entertainment, and cool. Art deals in the impossible and can illuminate visions of the world few dare to imagine. No human communication method on earth is more powerful, seductive, or persuasive than art. At Moxie Sozo, I enjoy applying strategy and art to branding and helping purpose-driven brands shape culture and industry for the better.

What should our readers know about your business?
Moxie Sozo is a branding agency based in Boulder, Colorado. We were founded by Leif Steiner in 1999, who willed us into existence with brilliant design, a tireless work ethic, and a hunger to become world-class. Our brands sit on virtually every aisle of the grocery store, liquor store, and dispensary. In addition, we’ve worked with clients on every continent, from startups to fortune 500 brands such as TaylorMade, Boston Beer Company (Sam Adams), Nike, and Nickelodeon.

I was promoted to CEO in 2017 but have learned many lessons over my 9-year tenure with the agency. Here are a few —

Finish the underside of the table: A real artist finishes the underside of the table. True quality may not be appreciated by all, but we should create to our own highest standards, not others (something Leif instilled in me).

Think fearlessly. Act boldly: Encourage wild ideation. Explore ideas that seem far-fetched. It’s easier to pull back an idea than push it out. Ultimately you may not pursue the most outlandish course of action, but the exploration might lead to new opportunities that would not have been uncovered by clinging too closely to the shore.

Good work feels good. Great work can feel uncomfortable: It’s easy to talk about greatness, but few accomplish it. A chasm of fear and doubt lies between the talk and the walk that will test your resolve and fortify your ideas. Get comfortable with a bit of discomfort; it can mean you’re on the right track.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When I travel, I usually have a list of things I want to eat before a list of places I want to go. With that in mind, here are a few culinary recommendations.

I live up in Nederland where there are some small but mighty local haunts. I like to indulge in the following:
Fresh pastries from New Moon Bakery
Tom Kha soup from Ubon Thai Cuisine
Dry Rubbed Wings from Busey Brews
The meatballs at Crosscut Pizza
The meatgrinder from Backcountry Pizza
A pint from Very Nice Brewing

The choices for great food and drink in Boulder are abundant. Here is a small selection, but hit me up and I can share with you a dozen others!
Seasonal flatbread from Salt Bistro
Arancini from Pizzeria Locale
Tiki drinks at Jungle
Potstickers from Zoe Ma Ma
A gin and tonic at Corrida
A Denali roll from Japango

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m fortunate to have the love and support of an incredible family and strong friendships. I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to them as well as Leif Steiner who opened many doors of opportunity to me.
