We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Proulx-Bostrom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evan, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for Embodied Therapy Group LLC. (ETG) originally started with my colleagues, Alyssa Proulx-Bostrom and Jade Davies. Jade and Alyssa had been friends in high school and reconnected when they heard that they were both going to grad school for therapy. They connected and started dreaming up the idea for ETG! Not only is Alyssa my colleague, but she is also my partner. So after a few conversations with Jade, she invited me into the dream. All three of us were preparing to graduate from our grad programs at the same time so the stars seemed to align. The unification of Alyssa, Jade, and myself is based on core values that we share. We believe in the empowerment and healing that trauma therapy can provide our clients. This belief became the root of the type of work we wanted to do and the services we wanted to offer our community.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I would not be where I am today without the support of my colleagues, supervisors, family, and graduate faculty. All of these people have helped me in some way or another to achieve success. I never dreamed of starting my own business directly out of school. I surely thought that I would need to take some time to get ready and jump into group practice. But, with some luck and a lot of support, I was able to kick-start my business directly after the completion of my graduate degree. I am incredibly grateful for the chances I have been provided.
Starting any business is hard. The first 6 months of our practice existence were very anxiety-inducing for me. In therapy school, you don’t learn how to become a business person. So you could there was a learning curve. With the support of my team, I was about to deal with this curve. We have found a lot of success early on in our practice. This success has come from our dedication, belief, and patience. We are dedicated to providing excellent services to our clients. We believe in what we stand for at ETG. And as any business owner knows, we practice patience as we continue to grow.
The main lesson we have learned is to be ourselves, lean into our strengths, and be open to each opportunity to grow. Private or group therapy practices traditionally grow by word of mouth. While we have developed strong ties to our community in order to grow our clientele by word of mouth we decided to play to our strengths. A major strength we have is our social media and web presence. We work hard to curate a brand that is worth following on social media and provides people with beneficial information along with advertising our work. The dedication to our brand and social following has netted a lot more business for us which is fantastic. It has also helped us create a community online! Our brand is focused on encouraging our clients to heal. We believe every client has the ability to heal and grow, even in the face of incredible pressures. It is our job to help clients discover this healing for themselves alongside us. This empowers our clients to grow past what we are able to do in therapy sessions. This commitment is what helps our clients see change that will last them a lifetime!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our story would not have been possible without Brook Bretthauer LMFT and Lauren Lessner LMFT. Both Brook and Lauren have served as supervisors for Alyssa, Jade, and I. This is a requirement in our field, to practice under supervision for some time. However, Brook and Lauren have consistently gone above and beyond their supervisory duties. They have provided us with support, advice, and guidance. They encouraged us to start and build this practice. Without their expertise and generosity, we would not be where we are today. These two are some of the best therapists I have come across in Colorado!
