We had the good fortune of connecting with Evin Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evin, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Balance is an ongoing practice. One that I certainly have not mastered. I still work 3 other hourly jobs along with running my business and hand making my products. I have to make a schedule and try and stick to it. Sometimes I am not successful with making enough time for myself. And I see the negatives of that almost immediately. I try and snowboard as much as I can because that is my stress reliever and it refills my cup.

I love to repurpose materials. That is how it all started. I would take old hats that I didn’t like the original patch or print and I would spice them up with fabric from clothes, sheets or found fabrics. I enjoy taking something that might get thrown away and turning it into something useful. I hand craft all the patches for my hats out of repurposed fabric; clothes, fabric from old projects, sheets ect. I make old helmets into flower pots. I am not at that part of my business where I can just focus on my art. I am still working 3 other jobs to pay off a new sewing machine and Blank hats, along with rent and other bills. It sometimes feels like I am constantly playing catch up, I make hats for an order while trying to stock my Etsy, I catch up and then there is another order. Which is a great problem to have, but very difficult when working doubles and needing to do that “eating and sleeping thing”. I want people to know that I have work hard at building this by myself, googling “how to get a llc” “how to set up a business bank account” I didn’t have someone guiding me along the way. And I have learned many things the hard way, one of the hardest was knowing my worth. Its hard to put a price tag on something and not know if people will think its worth it. I had to be the one to say “hell yeah its worth it, these hats take almost two hours”.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If it was during the winter here in Breckenridge, I would take them snowboarding. If snowboarding isn’t there thing we would lap the gondola (great views!) and look for moose! One of my favorite hikes/walks in all of Breck is Boreas pass that would for sure be on the list. I would eat at Peak of Asia, the best PHO in town! I would take them to the tap house to get N/A bloody (or regular)- best bloody in town! I am all about the views, the food and frolicking around town. If it was summer I would do everything the same, I would also add in taking e-bikes around around town, it is a great way to accessibly see more.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My friends have been the biggest support. When I first started making hand made/hand sewn patches on hats my community of raft guides were the first to jump on it and insist that they all had one. Still going forward friends and community and family have talked up my brand, repped the hats and donated fabric.
