We had the good fortune of connecting with Felicia Marti and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Felicia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Initially, I never thought I would start my own business because I wasn’t sure I wanted the stress of the business responsibilities. I honestly didn’t know if I was capable of figuring out the legal and financial details of opening up a business because I had never seen anyone else do it. However, life kind of pushed me toward it before I even thought I was ready. This came at a time when the job I had been in was no longer a good fit, and I knew I had this piece inside of me that envisioned my own approach with the artistry and how I wanted to work with customers. So I thought, I’ll just go through the steps of starting an LLC, and see what happens in that first year. My only real goal year one was to pay myself back for all my initial start up costs which included a new camera and lens, as well as a small batch of marketing materials. Having that very achievable goal and not having my business be my main source of income that first year allowed me to have a lot of fun with getting started and infuse launching my business with passion. There’s always a risk with starting a creative business that doing it for a living might take away from the joy that the task brings to you. One thing you may not think about at the beginning is that as a business owner, you may have to perform many job roles that they never imagined, including things that you don’t like doing or that are outside of your comfort zone. But along the way you will figure it out, you’ll learn more about what you don’t know, find resources who can take over the parts that are better for you to be hands free on, and you’ll find your way! At least that’s how it’s worked for me.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I launched Felicia Marti Photography in 2014, which has turned into a thriving wedding photography and videography company. I love that we now offer video services too as this helps us stand apart from the crowd. I honestly think what has played a huge role in our success has been constantly assessing what’s working while knowing what the next step we’re trying to achieve is. We’ve never settled for doing the same things next year that we did the previous year. We’re constantly evolving and using our customer’s experiences and feedback to help do so. What I want for others to know is that my team and I are real empathetic humans who deeply care about the experiences our customers have in front of the camera. We know it can be vulnerable or even awkward sometimes when having your photo taken, and we want to take all that away by providing lots of direction which will help you have more fun and feel like you can be yourself. This is essential for us so that we can capture your beautiful story the way you dreamed.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Denver is full of amazing places to spend time and enjoy the Rocky Mountains. Some of the must visit spots would include: Exploring Golden, Colorado by ordering breakfast from Bonfire Burritos, then walking along Clear Creek downtown or drive up Lookout Mountain where there’s some great views and hikes. Afterwards happy hour at Colorado + 49 to enjoy a flight of Ciders or Brews.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to thank Lisa Isom from The Minerva Group who has played a pivotal role in helping me figure out the right ways for me to grow my business and take leaps when I’ve needed to.
