We had the good fortune of connecting with Gaby Cotter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gaby, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose to pursue a career in art and music because it’s been a big part of my life since I was little. Growing up in Panama, I was always surrounded by music, singing songs my mom loved, and listening to my dad’s big collection of records. I started writing stories when I was 5, then poems, and by 14, I was writing songs with my guitar. I chose this career because music has always been my way of sharing stories and connecting with people. It’s been with me during tough times. Music was the place where I was able to be myself. It has their down moments, but also has been really rewarding.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In a few words, I’m able to see my career as a journey, not a destination; and this journey has been filled with wonderful places and people. I started writing and making music early on, and this passion for music and words took me from learning in Panama to studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston. I had the opportunity to explore different genres from jazz, salsa, R&B, and pop to folk and traditional music from different parts of the world. (Even singing in multiple languages!)
I care so much about the stories in the songs I choose, and that’s why I’m beyond excited to share that on April 5th, I’m releasing my first full-length album called “Cantora” which is a huge milestone in my career. It will be available on all online platforms and also on physical CDs! The album offers a deeply personal and emotional musical experience. “Cantora” is the result of a creative journey, in which I joined talent with the renowned Cuban pianist Harold Charon, to explore and celebrate my musical roots.
The recording process of “Cantora” stands out for its collaboration with renowned talents in the industry. Recorded and mixed by Nacho Molino and mastered by Daniel Ovie, I think this album captures the essence of why I love music so much. It was recorded in a single day, to preserve the authenticity and emotion of each performance, offering an intimate and direct experience to listeners “Cantora” is distinguished by its minimalist approach This album is not only a testament to the transformative power of music, but also a leap of faith in the ability to tell stories and connect souls through musical expression.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the area and I wanted to show them the best time ever, especially if they’re in Boston on a Thursday night, I would definitely take them to see Gaby Cotter and the Timba Messengers. I may be biased on this one but, it’s the most fun night in town! You can experience our vibrant music in one of the most historic jazz clubs in the country. It’s an evening that promises great energy, fantastic music, and a taste of the city’s rich musical culture. I will show them the historical places in Downtown, like walking the Freedom Trail and visiting the Boston Commons. I will take it to the MFA and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and to eat and drink I will suggest bar hopping. You can do it as you pleased by these are my suggestions: starting with eating my favorite burgers in town at “Dos Diablos” in Back Bay, Boston then finishing the night with drinks at my favorite tabern “The Druid” in Cambridge until the bar closes.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Sure! My journey to where I am now wasn’t just about my own work; it was hugely helped by the support and love of a lot of people. My family and friends are at the top of the list but I have to give the biggest shoutout to my husband. He’s been there for me in every way, especially when we moved to Boston for my studies. He’s been my strongest supporter, helping me with school, looking after me, and even cooking (the best meals tho!) for us and for our friends. Moving away from our home to start fresh in a new place was tough, but having him by my side made everything easier. His belief in me has been a big source of strength.
I’m also really grateful to Berklee College of Music. Getting a full scholarship there opened so many doors for me in music. Berklee wasn’t just a school; it was where I got to dive deep into music, meet amazing people, and gain opportunities that I’d never dreamed of.
The music and arts community in Boston deserves a huge thanks as well. The musicians, places like Wally’s Cafe Jazz Club, and groups like Departure Arts made me feel welcome and gave me chances to grow as an artist. Being part of festivals and events here has been some of the best parts of my career, thanks to the lively arts scene in this city.
I can’t forget the importance of having good mental health support. Dealing with mental health challenges has been a big part of my story, and the support from friends who turned into family here has been crucial. They remind me how important it is to reach out for help when you need it. This support network, including professionals and mentors, has been key to my success.
Finally, a big shoutout to everyone who’s ever come to see me perform, listen to my music or share their stories with me. Connecting with my audience is what really makes my music come alive, and their support keeps me going.
So, my journey is a story of all these incredible people who’ve supported me along the way. My husband, family, friends, Berklee, the Boston arts community, mental health supporters, and my listeners have all played a huge part in where I am today. They’ve taught me about strength, creativity, and the power of community in making a fulfilling life in music.
