We had the good fortune of connecting with Gary Ruiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gary, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risks have played a big part of my business success. Taking risks have taken me to where I am now. One clear example was when I decided to move to the United States. Sometimes, I think about what would have happened with me if I would had decided to stay in Mexico. I know that if I wouldn’t have taken the risk of leaving Mexico (which was super scary because it was a big decision), I wouldn’t have had the opportunities I’ve had till today, and the opportunity to pursue my career in Photography, and making it a business. So, if I could give anyone an advice, it would be “Take as many risks as life presents you” this can take you to so many beautiful experiences and will teach so much about life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey trough photography has been amazing and pretty interesting. Photography has been a way for me to express emotions and the way I perceive the world. In some way, it has been therapeutic for me. The act of creating makes me so happy. As my branding citation says: ” The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul”. Every picture I have taken represents a part of me and how im feeling in the moment (conceptual or fine art). This is what makes my Conceptual and Fine art pictures very personal and intimate.
On the other hand, my Lifestyle photography is based on the feelings of my customers. My goal is always to capture what they’re feeling and show their inner beauty. Capture their essence by knowing about them while shooting. It’s just amazing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Colorado is full of amazing places to visit, but I have some favorites. One of my favorite places in Colorado is Garden of the gods. It’s such a unique and beautiful place. Second place I would take them to would be The Paint Mines, in Calhan. This place is out of this world, literally. And last one would be my number one to go. It is Loyal coffee, in Downtown Colorado Springs. Best coffee ever, and the avocado toast is delicious!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

There have been many people that have inspired me, supported me, and have influenced my work. Starting with my family, they have been there since the beginning, my friends that have always been there supporting me, and the photographers I have met thru this beautiful journey.
One of them photographers is Alexia Mercado. I found her work through instagram, and it got me to start learning about portraits. It also took me to meet some amazing photographers (Ruth @ruthorozcoph Carlos @carloscorderophoto Liz @candesportrait_). I have learned a lot from them, and their friendship has taken me to work with amazing people and model agencies that I would have never imagined I would work with.
So this article is dedicated to all of them, friends, colleagues, and every person that supports my work. Huge thanks to you all. Every like, share or comment means a lot. Your support helps me to continue creating and pursuing my career as creative.
