We had the good fortune of connecting with Gesina Null and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gesina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my business as a side hustle. I thought once I graduated with my undergraduate, I would move onto a job in my field. Starting out, I did not think Gesina Marie Photography would be where it is today.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Wedding photography has become more commercialized and less like art, however, I like to bring the art back into the medium when photographing weddings. I do this by switching to analog 35mm film when possible. I can’t photograph the whole day on film, but small moments on grainy film brings me so much pleasure.

The art side of photography came easier then the business side. I learned the medium while in school, but no college course can prepare you for running a small business. I overcame this challenge by studying other photographers. I would look to my mentors and try to figure out how and why they were successful, then I would emulate them. For me this was difficult, because I did not know when starting this business I would need to be a photographer, sales, web designer, marketing, etc. It was all very overwhelming. Along the way I have learned to sub contract jobs that I don’t need to be directly doing. That gives me the time to focus on the important aspects of my business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start with Kaladis coffee and Trompu backers. These two gems have the very best backed goods and coffee in south Denver.

Then I would stop by Evergreen Jiu jitsu. Scott Miller is one of the best BJJ teachers in the Denver area.

I think we would have to take a walk in the mountains. Probably at Lair O The bear.

Mostly, I would want to take them to hang out with my close friends and family. Nothing is better then a good bbq.

Lastly, we would have to stop by Uncle Ramen. Latterly the best ramen in Denver. Their drinks are to die for.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Sounds cliche, but my husband. He has been the one supporting me the whole process. Boris Null has done everything from assisting me on wedding days to bringing me coffee when I’m deep in the editing process. I would not be here without him.
