We had the good fortune of connecting with Grant Holicky and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Grant, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance is a critical topic for entrepreneurs in that it is quite hard often to delineate between what is work and what is life. For me, as a coach and one whose business success is a product of being available to my athletes, work and the rest of my life have always bleeder together. I am almost always available via phone or email for my athletes and that can take me away from my family.
What I have done is drawn very hard lines around the pieces of my life that help me maintain balance. I draw a hard line around the evenings (dinner and bed times for my kids) and around my workout times. Many of the rides I do are with athletes and it is important that I see those as work as I have to be “on” and that often means I am not doing what I would like to do for a workout. Therefore, these sessions are no for me so I make sure there are times in the week that are for me. I seldom ride with anyone on those days.
Additionally, I am adamant about creating transposition times between the things that I am doing daily. Instead of quickly moving from work to family to exercise, I instead work in 5-10 minutes if transition time to be sure I leave work at work and family with family and approach the task in front of me with a clean slate.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My passion for coaching started at a very early age. I began at age 17 while I was still a competitive athlete myself. I believe that what I learned as a coach allowed me to be a better athlete and leader in sport. Just as teaching Biology dramatically increased my depth of knowledge in the subject, racing and coaching concurrently allowed for a depth of knowledge that I could not have achieved otherwise.
I have also always seen coaching as very much about the relationship between the two parties. The ability to relate to each athlete individually and serve their particular needs is critical to great coaching. I also believe that with a degree and education in both biology and sport psychology, I am uniquely positioned to assist athletes in all aspects of their sport and their life.
Coaching goes far beyond simply training athletes and I work hard to help facilitate this thinking for the coaches of Forever Endurance. Being available and highly communicative makes this possible.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Boulder is a playground of such things!
So much if it depends on the interests of the visitor but so much of the trip would be spent outside and in or in view of the front range. The food and drink here can speak to everyone so I would tailor it to the tastes of the visitor.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Cody Moore:
Cody is the original founder of Forever Endurance and his invitation for me to join as a partner in 2019 has provided me the opportunity to build my business in a way I could not previously imagine. Additionally, his work behind the scenes with the finance allows me to coach the way I do and help to mentor and help develop our other coaches
