We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah and Karl Schwender and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hannah and Karl, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
From the absolute beginnings of our business, we’ve noticed an all too common, unfortunate, and extremely inaccurate stigma about landscapers, and independent contractors in general. That stigma is that we don’t really care. I think I’m speaking for all that are employed in the green industry when I say that caring about what we do is our main motivation to get up and go to work every day. To some clients, we may just be the people that mow your lawn every week…which is just fine! What they may not know is that we’re keeping track of which direction we mow on every visit as to keep your grass from getting bruised. Or, that we’re up late googling the right product to bring your lawn to that perfect shade of green. My husband and I’s business is very contained, literally just the two of us. This allows us to form genuine, lasting relationships with a majority of our clients. After we’ve finished a project, let’s say a native plant design and installation. Karl and I will talk about it for months afterward-what we loved about it, how we could have made it even better, did we make YOU happy? We want to see the “after” pictures. If things didn’t go as planned, we want to fix it. One of our main goals is to break this stigma and develop your outdoor goals in a caring, personal, and positive process from start to finish.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When we were first dating, both of us were working in restaurants, as well as having side hustles. I was gardening and Karl was mowing lawns. We quickly invited each other on our gigs because we liked the company. After we got engaged, the pandemic hit and working in the service industry became increasingly difficult. After many long conversations, we both decided to make the jump and take on a full-time career with our growing business. Now we get to work side by side in the outdoors and life just can’t get any better!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is going to sound totally cliche, but we often take out of town visitors to the Denver Botanic Gardens! This city has one of the best I’ve been to, especially considering our unique climate. While in that area, we would absolutely take them to one of Denver’s best restaurants, Potager in in Capitol Hill. They offer a farm to table, seasonal menu that is beyond fantastic.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We’d like to dedicate this shoutout to all of our lovely clients who have helped our business and your gardens grow!
