We had the good fortune of connecting with Hector Sector and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hector, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Main reason why I’m making this a career for myself is because it’s what gives me my drive. The arts are what keep me alive and what give me purpose for doing what I do. I love being able to make the art that I want and I love sharing my work with viewers who love my work as much as I do. I also glad I can share my message of accessibility in the art world with my art.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My big thing is that I work prominently on cardboard. I paint on it, draw o it, layer it, carve it, make 3D pieces out of it, etc. My subject matter varies from theme to theme, as I don’t ever want to stick with one major theme. I like to explore many types of themes so my audience can relate to my work a bit more.

I’m pretty excited about the fact that I just became a resident over at the RemainReal Fine Art gallery, which allows me to show my art on a daily basis. This has been a goal of mine for the longest time and I’m thankful for the opportunity to work with these amazing individuals to get my foot into the Denver Art District scene.

I got to where I am professionally mostly through sheer dedication of uploading online and showing my art since 2016. I’ve been in numerous local galleries and have been working hard to get my work noticed, and I can admit that it’s been a challenge. It’s been hard when there are hundreds of artists who also want to get their work seen, so I always try to find ways to make myself stand out. That’s why I wear a box on my head, as it’s an extension of my work and basically turn myself into a walking art piece.

The biggest lesson I learned is to stay true to your art and learn to love your work before you show your work to others. I’ll sit with an art piece and look at it and in my mind list off the things that I think really work with it and will only put it out into the world until I know I fully love it.

The big thing that I want people to know about my work is that art needs to be accessible to a wider audience, as I believe art can and should be for everyone.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of the first places I would check out for sheer variety of the locations to look at would be Broadway St. The amount of shops, bars, and food there is always great to go explore new places. One of my favorites down there is Sweet Action, an ice cream shop that creates its own exclusive flavors. Then head over to some of the great shops such as Crossroads Trading, a clothing shop where you can trade clothes in for cash or credit.

If you’re looking for beautiful and unique art places to go to on the weekend, definitely check out any of the art districts. Santa Fe st has numerous art galleries all with varying artists and themes. Hopefully you make it on the first friday of the month as all galleries are open until the later hours of the night and there are a variety of art stands, food vendors, local vintage thift stores and clothing shops, and local entertainment. 40W Gallery district has a great gallery in the HUB Building that hosts seven local creative businesses which host art shows every month and is an ever expanding art district all throughout Colfax, all of which is right next to Casa Bonita, a true sight to behold (if you can ever get a reservation).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to the amazing people over at RemainReal Fine Art Gallery over on Santa Fe. They deserve the shoutout as I love how they make art accessible to a wider audience, especially when it comes to people who want to submit art to their shows, as they make it easy to do so with no cost nor a complicated process. Great people to work with and to work for!
