We had the good fortune of connecting with Imthiaz Houseman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Imthiaz, what inspires you?
For as long as I can remember, I have always been inspired by fashion photographer Russell James and celebrity photographer Elizabeth Messina. I feel their work shows the inner beauty of their subject. A lot of my influence also comes from the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition. They do a great job of showing the diversity of women. I also look for inspiration everywhere, whether it’s an ad I see in a magazine or a commercial on TV. When it comes down to it, I want to make a stunning, beautiful, and timeless photograph of a woman.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
There are a lot of photographers in the industry, so I have to make sure I stand out in the crowded field of super talented people! I love creating modern, timeless, and classic photographs of women, and I hope this is one thing that sets me apart! My natural-light photography style is something women want, so I also make sure the client experience is what leaves them talking about me. Sessions have to be fun, and I want my clients to put their guards down. I’ll make fun of myself, maybe make fun of them, and tell some bad jokes because I want them to walk away and say what a great time they had! I do think my experience has helped me get this far. I have photographed hundreds of women and make sure my business evolves to ensure my clients get the best products so they will have a gift that will last a lifetime. I also shoot a lot of black and white film photos. I wanted to set myself a part of other photographers in the industry because my work as a whole is heavily influenced by black and white photography.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh my goodness, what a great question! When my friends come out to visit, the first stop is always a great bite to eat. I would most likely take my friends to Finley’s in Wash Park. The Finley burger is one of my favorites, and you can’t beat the great selection of beer on tap! Breakfast would have to be most likely Lucielle’s. I love southern-inspired food! Hopefully, they visit during farmer’s market season, and we can go to Boulder to the farmer’s market and then for a great hike. I always encourage anyone visiting to visit any of our mountain towns because it’s so great getting up to the high country! Our outdoor summer concerts are always fun to do. During the fall season, one of our favorite things to do is apple/vegetable picking. We have some great farms in Colorado, and going out onto a farm with your basket and picking fresh produce is a lifelong memory!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a shoutout to all the women I have photographed! It has been an incredible journey, and I wouldn’t be where I am without them! They have come back time after time for different types of photo sessions and have sent their friends and families to me. I love being a part of the family! I have clients who now have kids, and I’m watching them grow up, and it’s fantastic!
