We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacien Bass and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacien, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Courage, resilience, persistence and an emphasis on valuing people over profit. Before I started this business, one thing that kept me from really putting my best foot forward was fear of the unknown. I was afraid that if what I created wasn’t perfect, I couldn’t share it. Once I made the decision to “just do”, it was like a whole new world opened up for me. I had this newfound ability to share my work and my vision without fear of being judged. It was absolutely liberating, and I applied this concept to everything I did professionally. I think fear has a lot to do with why many people have an idea for a business but won’t put their thoughts into action. It’s easy to ruminate over what could go wrong; and as part a very natural human response, err on the side of caution. While I haven’t thrown caution to the wind, I have replaced caution with courage. I have adapted a mindset rooted in resilience. I put an emphasis on finding solutions, providing value and on serving people. Operating from this position, enables everything else to fall in place.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
The road to get to where I am currently, hasn’t been an easy one. I’ve had multiple setbacks but I always see difficult situations as opportunities to learn something new. I am a big believer that growth takes place outside of your comfort zone and I overcome challenges by seeking perspective. I recently had a very tough conversation with a colleague, and when it was all said and done, I felt really good about the stance I made because it was made from a place of integrity. I know that business can be cutthroat, but greed and arrogance simply aren’t in my nature. I focus on working hard, providing value, investing in people and facing tough situations head on with brutal honesty. Doing so makes hard conversations a bit easier and it provides clearer navigation over difficult hurdles along the way. This mindful approach sets me apart both in business and on a personal level.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a tough one because Colorado is a beautiful place, and we are so close to so many amazing destinations! I would take my best friend on the trails at Lookout Mountain, Estes Park or to walk the Garden of Gods. Depending where we decided, we would then make our way to the Santa Fe Arts District or a local museum. After that we would venture to one of my favorite local eateries, Bacon Social House. We would walk, shop and snack at the Black Arts Festival or Juneteenth and then head to the Red Rocks Amphitheater for an evening concert under the stars.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this Shoutout to all the undeserved and underrepresented minorities in our community, and the exceptional organizations working tirelessly to level the playing field, and provide these groups with the tools and resources necessary to improve their lives and rewrite their legacy. I also want to Shoutout my father, my brothers and my sisters. Despite tragedy upending our entire existence as a family in 2017, they continue to press ahead and show me what it means to have courage and to walk in my own light. They are my biggest advocates and supporters, and I am so grateful for their unconditional love. And last but certainly not least, I want to Shoutout those who have lost loved ones to suicide, as well as those who are dealing with thoughts of suicide. You are loved; you are not alone. Together, we are stronger and we can overcome.
