We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaime Hinckson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaime, what role has risk played in your life or career?
You can’t get a six if you don’t roll the dice! My musical career has been all about taking risks that everyone usually advises against. Over the years, I’ve come to find that most people are comfortable with playing it safe. But when your mind is set on higher goals and pushing the brink, you come to realize there’s no choice but to walk the path less traveled. It is a lonely road with an unknown destination, but always worth it to know that you had the bravery to take the first step in that direction. As long as you have a plan to get to your finish line, put on those blinders and execute! More people will doubt you than encourage you, so you must be willing to jump over hurdles and be resilient in your efforts. It can’t be done until you show them it can.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The music business is definitely not for everybody. It took a lot of determination during some of the darkest times to get to the small stepping stone I’ve reached today. It is an ongoing battle that does not guarantee awards or recognition, but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. My journey has been very humbling because things never work out as planned. Most times, any benefits you reap come from an old idea from 5 years prior that you already wrote off as a failure. If it’s one thing I’ve learned, it doesn’t matter how many people are tuned into your musical story; all it takes is the right one person to hear it at the perfect time. The key is to continue planting seeds, never knowing which one will actually bear fruit. The moment you feel like stopping is when you’re on the cusp of your greatest breakthrough.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My biggest encouragement has always and will forever be my piano teacher, Joan “Miss Mac” McMorris. My music label and first original composition are both named after her to ensure I always keep her close in my musical journey. From I started piano lessons with her around age 7, Miss Mac would tell me how amazing I was and would go on and on about how great I was going to become. I didn’t even like taking piano lessons when she would speak of these things, so I would always write it off as “old-lady talk.” Little did I know, my love for music would blossom as well as my eagerness to challenge myself with new projects. Now, I can’t see myself doing anything else for the rest of my life. This is where I love to be, this is where I was meant to be. I am gradually seeing some of the things she spoke into existence over 20 years ago and remain in awe at all the accomplishments she has motivated me to achieve. BIG SHOUTOUT TO MISS MAC!!
