Meet Jake Bones | Sound & Design

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Bones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jake, why did you pursue a creative career?
Before the idea of pursuing any kind of career ever began to cement in my head I was drawing voraciously. My favorite class throughout school was any form of art class. I was forced to eventually pursue a career by material necessity of course, and so I just began learning every creative skill related to music and design I felt drawn to, and began working for anyone who would have me as an artist, designer, recording engineer, or producer. I didn’t really choose to make this my career, I just jumped at any chance to do the things I love, and if I can get compensated for my work, wonderful.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a freelance or contract creative, my work is incredibly broad. As a designer I have helped envision and bring to life everything from metal band logos to an Artificial Intelligence UI prototype. Lately, In the music industry I have filled the role of engineer, producer, performer, and more recently, live sound technician at Creepatorium.
I think my insatiable curiosity has been a leading factor in my continued survival as a freelance creative. I have a hard time calling my career successful, since I’m driven as much by my desire to fail & learn as I am driven to succeed. I got where I am today by enjoying the journey, and my desire to support the wonderful community I am a part of.
I guess one lesson I would like to pass along to other people who might be looking to get into a creative field is the one I have the hardest time accepting: your art, your work, has value. Most people you work with will have to be convinced of this for you to make a living. It is a lot easier if you convince yourself first, but it isn’t required. Just keep doing it anyways.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Denver, it really has every weird thing you could want. For me, I would suggest getting a drink from Scr3am & Sugar Coffee and checking out Denver’s only Horror shop, Horrid before catching a show at D3 Arts. I also love Akihabara, a japanese barcade in Arvada, Chain Reaction Records in Lakewood, and Wizard’s Chest, a costume and games and all-things-nerdy shop on South Broadway.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out the Denver branch of the Party For Socialism & Liberation, for inspiring me to see a better future. I think a lot of people need hope, and the work the PSL is doing right now is incredibly important to our city and our communities.
