We had the good fortune of connecting with Janice Ferrante and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janice, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I made a significant career decision by choosing a lifestyle change that came with the risk of losing my biggest client. For nearly a decade, I had been working as the primary agency for BMW of North America. However, I felt ready to leave my hometown in New Jersey and move to Boulder, Colorado, even though the client had cautioned that relocating might jeopardize our partnership. Trusting my instincts, I decided to pursue a better quality of life in the mountains. Surprisingly, my business with BMW grew over the next two years, despite the distance. This decision ended up having a profound impact on my life.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Oblique Design is a branding and interactive agency specializing in logo, website, and package design. As the driving force behind Oblique for over two decades, I’ve earned every scar and skill along the way. My journey has been marked by a constant evolution with technological trends and an intuitive grasp of my clients’ audiences.

Oblique Design has carved out a unique space in the branding world, thanks to our distinctive and collaborative approach. We prioritize working with clients who share our values, believing that true partnership is built on a foundation of mutual respect and understanding. By connecting with like-minded clients on all levels and leveraging the talents of our dedicated team, we’ve secured opportunities with respected brands like BMW, MINI, Lexus, Dish Network, Backpacker Magazine, Wolky, Talon International, Red Fox Outdoor, and Duke University.

Before Oblique, I cut my teeth in the bustling creative hubs of NYC and New Jersey. As an Art Director and Lead Designer, I worked with some of the world’s most iconic brands—Sony, HBO, Pfizer, Nickelodeon, Fox News, Ricola, PSE&G, and AT&T.

Fueled by honesty and boundless energy, I’m a whirlwind of creativity and passion. Whether I’m standing at my desk, zipping around on my Vespa, blazing mountain bike trails, striking a pose on my yoga mat, or feeding my outdoor obsession, I’m always on the go. As a lifelong learner and avid traveler, I continuously weave international influences into my daring designs, keeping my work fresh and forward-thinking.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Having lived in Boulder for the past 20 years, I would take them to the following:

Denver Art Museum
BMOCA
Dairy Arts Center
Chautauqua for a concert or hike
RMNP
Red Rocks for a concert
Nederland
Dushanbi Tea House
Boulder Farmer’s Market
Wednesday night concert on the Bricks in Boulder

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to the owners and Creative Directors of my previous agencies. I will never forget their support, mentorship, and guidance, which I now pass on to my interns and the Oblique team.

Additionally, I want to acknowledge the SheSays organization and Denver Women in Business for Good Grapevine. Both organizations empower women by helping business leaders in the Denver and Boulder areas to build connections and enrich our professional while contributing to the greater community.
