We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Fitzgerald and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started Strength Running as a resource for runners to train smarter. In 2010, there were very few sources of information about running on the internet and I knew that as a former collegiate track and field and cross country runner, I could help recreational runners train in a more effective way to reduce their injury risk and run faster finishing times. I had lived this experience, having had a string of serious injuries myself that nearly ended my running career, and knew that the lessons I learned could positively impact runners.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Strength Running is a coaching and media business with one goal: to help runners achieve their best. I’ve been borderline obsessed with best practices and “ideal run training” for my entire life and that informs everything we do at Strength Running. What started as a blog in 2010 has now grown into a YouTube channel with nearly 100,000 subscribers, one of the country’s most popular running podcasts, and an email newsletter read by more than 50,000 runners. Strength Running is unique in that it presents a unified, consistent training theory and the resources to help any runner accomplish their goals.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the guidance, mentorship, and example from all of my coaches. For eight straight years of cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track, I was guided by over 10 coaches at the high school and college level who helped me form my understanding of the sport. And in particular, I’d like to thank Jeff Glew and Jim Butler for believing in me, pushing me, and expecting the best from me.
