We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Bryant and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Art has always been my first love. I’ve been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. Even when I went on to study advertising and graphic design, life had other plans—I ended up in the finance world instead. It didn’t stop my creativity.
For years, my wife, Amanda Maestas, and I used our corporate jobs to fuel our biggest passions: art and adventure. We traveled the world, soaking up inspiration from galleries, street art, and creative spaces everywhere we went. Those trips sparked endless conversations and dreams about one day starting something of our own. Art was always at the heart of it, waiting for the right moment to take center stage.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Originally, my wife and I had separate visions for the kind of businesses we wanted to create. She dreamed of opening a boutique or a gallery, and I was all about crafting an immersive space filled with digital art and sound. We thought our ideas were worlds apart. But after she passed, I realized that wasn’t true. Our dreams weren’t separate—they were pieces of the same puzzle.
In the midst of my grief, it became clear that my career in finance no longer held any meaning. I needed something that felt real, something that brought joy—not just to me, but to others too. That’s when the Amanda Maestas Art Foundation was born, to honor her love of art and creativity. The foundation supports local artists by funding their materials, acquiring their work, and mentoring the next generation of creators. From there, the gallery—SP_CE 13, came to life, a partnership with my amazing friend and business partner, Alison Schumejda.
Here’s the thing about SP_CE 13: it’s not just a gallery. It’s a whole experience. Every show transforms the space into something entirely new. The walls, the lighting, even the sound—everything is designed to pull you into the artist’s world. The music isn’t just background noise; it’s handpicked to give you a peek inside the artist’s inspiration. It’s art you feel, not just see.
We call SP_CE 13 “A Visual. Experiment.” because that’s exactly what it is. Every exhibition is different—new art, fresh perspectives, even exclusive items like limited prints or enamel pins. At our first solo show with Justas Marcink, we didn’t just sell original works; we made sure there were pieces for collectors at every level. Whether you’re buying your first print or your fiftieth, we want you to feel like you’re part of something special.
We’re not just about selling art—we’re about creating moments. When you purchase a piece, it’s not just wrapped up and sent off. It’s presented in a custom box with a certificate of authenticity because owning art should feel as special as the art itself.
Our mission? To make the art world accessible, exciting, and completely un-intimidating. SP_CE 13 is a place where curiosity is celebrated, and no one feels out of place, no matter where they are on their art journey.
For us, the gallery is more than a space. It’s a way to keep evolving, to keep people guessing what’s next. One show might have bold installations with cutting-edge soundtracks, and the next might offer small, affordable pieces that are perfect for anyone starting their collection. It’s always changing, always surprising.
Out of heartbreak came this incredible space and purpose —a place where creativity thrives, connections are made, and people can see the beauty in things they never expected.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Denver has a lot of great places, and it’s hard to narrow it down to just one! To eat – I would say Safta, Tavernetta or Bekon, which has an amazing chef-to-table experience. For something a bit more casual, Cart Driver, Joy Hill, or Dio Mio. For drinks, some of my favorites are B&GC, Fellow Traveler and Death & CO.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this to my family for their unwavering support. My friend and business partner, Alison Schumejda, never ceases to amaze me and remind me that she is the perfect person to be on this journey with me. Also, the incredible local Denver Art Community which has opened its arms in support and friendship.
