We had the good fortune of connecting with Jayy Romero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jayy, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
I can sit here and list hundreds of values and principles that matter to me, but if I was being completely raw about how I feel, I would honestly say that the most important value to me would be creativity. Majority of people might disagree with me and say creativity shouldn’t be considered a principle or value.
But for me, it’s different.
Why?
When I first started my graphic design business, I knew, on the surface, I wanted to help my clients’ visions come to life by creating their logos, t shirt designs, album covers and more. I knew, under the surface, I was an empathetic artist that could navigate someone’s vision successfully in a way that maybe another graphic designer couldn’t because of my unique creativeness. But deep down I also knew that my creativity could be meant for more.
During this time in the beginning process of starting my business in 2021, I stumbled upon this article from the University of New South Whales written by Ben Knight precisely titled “The Value of Creativity” (which is an absolutely marvelous read in its entirety if you should ever look it up) Knight states, “But the value of creativity is more than simply generating new ideas (etc.). It’s about harnessing the potential to make positive change.” And that simple but not so simple quote changed my mindset on my values forever. Everything we’ve ever done as a human race had to involve creativity. Without it there would be no imagination to want more or better for ourselves and others. (i.e positive change like Knight exclaims) By not allowing our own creativity to blossom, we can never change where we are now and grow.
And that’s why it’s the most important value to me.
I now realize that I was right and that my creativity truly is meant for more because I now see it as a value. Wether it be changing the world somehow through my graphic design business or helping many people by taking another ‘creative’ career route- anything is possible with the value of creativity.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve answered a lot of these questions in a previous article for this magazine (see “Rising Stars: Meet Jayy Romero”) so I don’t want to sound redundant; but something really important I would like the world, or whoever is reading this right now to know about me is that if it’s possible for me to follow my dreams then that means that it’s also possible for you too! It’s not easy leaving the 9-5 world and venturing off into your own business or lifestyle that the majority of the world doesn’t agree with; especially because we’ve been programmed to believe that a 9-5, working for someone else, or following the system is the only way to live. It’s a hard process to overcome challenges you may face following your dreams because you have to take risks and truly believe in yourself enough to stay disciplined on your lazy days and positive on your bad days. But I’m proof that it’s possible. So don’t give up on your dream. Take the risk. You’ll be surprised how much happier you become with this new sense of freedom by being your own boss and following the path that YOU want. Not the path that your parents wanted for you or the path that society told you would be the safest to take. And like myself, once you’ve accomplished your dream- DREAM BIGGER. Expand your vision. Want the absolute best for yourself and never give up on creating new dreams that will allow your authentic self to flourish and impact your world somehow!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There has been many people along my journey that have been so loving and supportive like my amazing family, friends, and followers. I cannot thank any of them enough for being proud of me and supporting my business even if they don’t even need a design. Simply recommending my business, sharing my work, following/keeping up with my business etc has helped my company stay consistently successful. And for that I’m forever thankful. I appreciate everyone in my life that shows me love and support. This shoutout is dedicated to them.
