We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeffrey Coghill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeffrey, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Practice, practice, practice. As I started to take music more seriously in my 40’s, I learned that practice and training were essential. I now strongly believe in guitar lessons, vocal training and continual process of challenging oneself in improving the craft. The lessons and training enable me to practice correctly and not develop bad habits that I have to spend time undoing. So guess I should have stated: lessons, training, and coaching then practice, practice, practice.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think music and song writing have always been in me and I ignored it for so many years. I mentioned my college roommate and track and field teammate Mike Thompson earlier—he was first person to show me playing guitar and playing instruments. All I did for the next 20 years though was just a casual approach; picking it up here and there. It wasn’t until life introduced some pain and turmoil—much of it self inflicted—and meeting my buddy Jimmy McClung that I woke up and realized the gift of it and how valuable it was in healing all the hurt inside of me. It was then I started taking it much more seriously and it blossomed like I can’t explain. A journey that started off as a healing mechanism has evolved into writing about hope, encouragement, joy and positive attitude. I continue to balance the music with a professional day job, with dreams of someday making music the full time part of my days.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Colorado so mostly I would take someone to visit areas of the state. I grew up on the Western Slope of the state so I’d first take them clear over to Grand Junction to see the Colorado National Monument, Grand Mesa and little town of Palisade famous for their peaches. I’d then show them Glenwood Springs for a nice relaxing soak in their famous hot springs. Making our way back to the Front Range, there are plenty of peaks to maybe catch a good day hike. Then, the city of Denver is an avid sports town so depending on the time of year maybe take in a Broncos football game, Avalanche hockey game or a Colorado Rockies baseball game.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My story has been shaped by so many people. Within the musical gift and nurturing—Mike Thompson, Jimmy McClung, Andy Sydow and RaeLynn Martinez. These four people have given me an incredible gift in lessons, training, support, coaching and encouragement in this creative adventure. Others that have made this journey enriching are my wife Annie and daughter Kailea. My brother Lou, his wife Athena, and my parents Bob and Judy are my biggest fans. Also, all those I’ve met and engaged with in the music community itself.
