We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Beck and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think risk threshold is something unique to everyone, but it’s important to be comfortable with it if you’re an entrepreneur. Being an entrepreneur is inherently risky, but I think it’s also risky to sit in a “stable” job. First of all, it’s important to remember that there aren’t any guarantees – whether you’re working for someone else or yourself, life can change in an instant.

The worst case scenario for an entrepreneur is losing everything, but the end of the day, we don’t leave this earth with our material possessions. When I wake up I ask myself, “am I living with purpose today?” “am I doing my best?” “am I creating something I’m proud of?”. To me, the biggest risk is waking up and realizing I’ve wasted my precious life building someone else’s dream. In this pursuit, I might have a greater feeling of personal responsibility, financial exposure, and fears to work through on a daily basis than if I had a steady job and paycheck, but I also have more potential upside. I’m building equity value, my personal brand, and contributing my best to the world around me.

I have taken a lot of risks and, so far, they have allowed me to live a life far beyond what I was capable of achieving climbing a corporate ladder. It brings out the best in me and allows me to design a life with my family, as a woman, wife and a mom, that is multi-faceted and multi-dimensional. To me, the risk would be not even trying.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our business, Jihi, is a high end body care line that integrates high quality CBD with spa-grade skincare and a delicious sleep tincture. Our goal is to help high performing people sleep deeper, recover faster, and discover their most vibrant inner and outer glow. I’m most excited about our fabulous brand and products, which is devoted to raising the vibration of CBD products and elevating the experience and results for consumers. Customers are using and loving our products, and the brand’s mission to promote true wellness from the inside out is unfolding in an authentic, beautiful way.

Our last company, Cannabase, was an electronic wholesale platform in the legal cannabis market. We were pioneers in data aggregation and market analytics, connecting growers with dispensaries across Colorado and eventually in Washington and Oregon as well. We sold the platform to Helix TCS (now Forian, Inc) in 2016, and it was rolled into a leading cannabis point of sale tracking system, BioTrack THC.

Building and selling Cannabase was a thrilling, challenging adventure. We got a ton of insight into sourcing, extraction, and manufacturing which we applied to the 2 year R&D process that went into Jihi’s debut product line. Cannabis is heavily regulated, but CBD is not yet regulated. By applying our knowledge of best practices to the design and development of our CBD products, we believe we are setting a standard for compliance, quality and results.

It’s so exciting being in this new side of the industry reaching consumers with our life-changing products, and doing it through a brand that is so deeply meaningful to us.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a Denver native, it’s so hard to choose! I absolutely love this city and state. I would probably start in Denver for a couple days, where we would have to hop through Cherry Creek – we could eat at my absolute favorite place for tacos and margaritas, Machete Tequila + Tacos – then visit South Broadway, and go downtown for a bit. Next, we would visit Boulder – where I spent a record 6 years at CU Boulder – and visit Bliss on Pearl (where we could shop for Jihi!) and my friend Dr. Caite at Amaluna Wellness. Last year, before lockdowns, my friend and I visited a gong bath ceremony up in the hills of Boulder and it was one of the most fabulous experiences of my life – I’d love to do that again. The second half of the week we’d head to Breckenridge, which I love for its incredible network of trails. We could ride our bikes all the way to Vail and back, giving her a true immersive experience into Colorado’s incredible landscape, not to mention a great workout!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to my husband, Chase. We have co-founded all of our ventures together, and everything I have been able to achieve in my career is because of his talents, open-mindedness, and support. He balances out my skill sets – I am the fire that drives the business, but he is the earth that grounds the work. He is a talented web developer and multi-media creator, as well as an astute businessman and overall good decision maker. More than anything, he believes in our dreams for an independent, meaningful life and encourages me to get out there and shatter any ceiling we come across. He’s my champion, business partner, and the most fabulous co-parent and I’m so lucky to build a life with him.
