We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Medina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After many years in the mainstream healthcare system, I decided to branch out and create a suite of health and wellness services and programs that educate and help people understand more about how they can take control of their brain health. Our health care system primarily operates with a reactive approach – we tend to treat problems after they’ve occurred. The wellness mindset empowers us to take control of preventing problems before they occur. How often do doctors ask their patients, “How is your brain health doing?” or “What are you doing to take care of your brain?” My business, Brain Space, empowers people to focus on their brain health to support the brain, protect from the aging process, and optimize cognitive or thinking skills in their work and personal lives. Focusing on brain health early in life is especially important for maximizing our ability to thrive as we age. Shifting the cultural mindset towards one of prevention is what motivates me to impact the healthcare system in a positive way.
What should our readers know about your business?
As a neuropsychologist, I work with individuals who have neurological and cognitive disorder. I help people understand their cognitive strengths and weaknesses, and if they are struggling in an area, such as with a memory disorder, I offer support and strategies to help them be their best despite their vulnerabilities. I extended my patient care services into the health and wellness space, to create a suite of offerings called Brain Space. Essentially, I want to help people avoid ever having to become my patient. While some may feel this is a lofty pipe dream, I feel that education and inspiration around the concept of making choices to support the health of our brain is an essential part of taking care of ourselves. Few people really think about their unique cognitive style, or how they can leverage their cognitive strengths to set themselves up for success. Brain Space offers support with 4 pillars that are driven by empirical research and our scientific understanding of what supports and protects the brain. By making lifestyle choices that optimize Cognitive Wellness, Exercise & Diet, managing Stress, and improving Sleep Quality, we are taking control of our brain health. Most people take care of their teeth, their skin, their eyes…..how are you taking care of your brain?
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My husband and I love dining at Brazen. The craft cocktails are delicious and the food is thoughtful and well prepared. We’ve enjoyed sitting at the bar, in front of the kitchen line where we’ve chatted with the chef, or in the dining room with a group of friends. A visit to Colorado would be incomplete without a hike in our beautiful Rocky Mountains. We really enjoy exploring Golden Gate State Park, followed by sitting outdoors at a local brewery such as New Terrain (awesome vistas), Denver Beer Co (love the Princess Yum Yum), or Cerebral Brewery (great urban vibe).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My professional academic mentors have challenged and supported me in meaningful ways and I credit them for planting seeds that have allowed me to succeed in my career. My family offers a bottomless well of support and will always be there when I need them. Above all, my husband who doubles as my partner-in-life and business coach is the one who pushes me, believes in me, and offers invaluable wisdom day-to-day.
