We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Toon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“I don’t know if you know who you are until you lose who you are.” ~ Taylor Swift

Incarceration completely takes everything you once were and forces you to re-examine that. This is how I found my true self-through the struggles and rising above. I had to lose everything to find myself,

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My professional journey has not been an easy one. I faced and still face significant barriers due to my criminal background, which has made it challenging to find opportunities. My faith and resilience became my driving forces during the darkest moments. I firmly believed that my past did not define my future, and I was committed to proving that I could rise above my mistakes.

But belief and self-determination weren’t the only things that helped me surmount these challenges. It’s been the people who gave me chances when no one else would. They saw my potential and were willing to look beyond my past mistakes. Their support has been crucial.

I’ve learned some invaluable lessons. One of the most important lessons is that when you need help, just ask. People are often willing to lend a hand, share advice, or provide opportunities if you are transparent and genuine.

My story is not unique; it’s a reflection of the experiences of countless women and girls who are fighting to overcome their pasts and strive for a brighter future. I want the world to understand that transformation is possible. None of us should ever be defined solely by our mistakes. My journey is a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and the support of those who believe in me. It’s a reminder that behind every person with a criminal background lies a story of growth, determination, and the potential to meaningfully contribute as a citizen.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Actually, me and two other friends were in Colorado for a conference, and during the down time we took off for a quick road trip to Estes Park to see the Stanley Hotel. I can’t think of a recent trip where I had so much fun and really had time to just cherish my friendships outside of us always doing advocacy work. So, for me, just having road trips, sightseeing the most random stuff, stopping for local eats and drinks, that makes for the perfect time with those you enjoying spending time with.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to dedicate this to my friends, family, God and Taylor Swift.

As a formerly incarcerated woman, my success and journey is rooted in the bond I share with other women who have been in the criminal legal system. It’s a profound connection that has helped me transform my personal struggles into a source of strength. I also credit my family’s unwavering belief in my potential, my spiritual faith, and yes, much to my loved one’s groans, the inspiration I have drawn from Taylor Swift’s journey. This mosaic of influences has shaped me to be the woman and leader I am today.
