We had the good fortune of connecting with Jes! Hitch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jes!, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Luxe Couture Hair Design was born from a deep desire to build a better hair experience.
As an Artist and Designer, I’ve worked for thirteen years behind the chair in several salons, and I always found the experience lacking. I would be told by new guests all the time that they’ve never had a hair color or cut that they liked, or that they were told “that’s just how your hair is, deal with it”. It broke my heart. I’ve noticed that many salons focus on quantity and getting things done as quickly as possible, and personally, I find that experience to be lacking.
You deserve a salon experience that is safe, comfortable, and luxurious. You deserve a Designer that takes care of you.
Many people have told me I’m “extra”, or “too much”, or “over the top”. However, my belief is that your hair should be Designer, like a Chanel bag or Gucci shoes. It should be Couture–created and crafted just for you. You are unique, and your hair is the only accessory you don’t remove at the end of the day.
I built Luxe Couture Hair Design on three principles:
1. Hair is the most unique and impactful feature and must be handled with care and responsibility.
2. People are unique, and deserve to have hair designed specifically for their anatomy, lifestyle, and desired results.
3. The design must be Couture; tailored and designed exclusively for one person only.
I believe that you deserve to have the hair you’ve always dreamed of, and to have your hair designed for your unique personality and lifestyle. Fashion houses often create haute couture dresses and designs that are built for one specific person. Why shouldn’t your hair be designed the same way?
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a high school dropout, and I was almost a beauty school dropout too. I struggled for most of my life with undiagnosed and unmanaged ADHD, and was plagued with issues around focus and functionality. I always knew that I wanted more, and could do and be MORE, but I didn’t have the tools.
I was destined to be an entrepreneur. I remember being around 9 years old and looking at beads and string in the craft aisle at Walmart and thinking that I could make bracelets and necklaces and sell them at school. I come from a large family and money was extremely tight growing up, and I ached for the freedom that owning my own business could give me. I wanted to be independent and responsible for my own money. I worked several retail, restaurant, and office jobs and knew I did not want to work for someone else my whole life.
I love the freedom that doing hair gives me. I’ve worked behind the scenes with several local performance spaces, designing hair and makeup for multiple ballets, plays, and musicals. I’ve worked on two short films and several editorial photo shoots. I’ve worked backstage for fashion shows and produced two of my own. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity and honor of creating a look for dozens of brides on their wedding days. And I’ve been able to perform onstage myself, as well as start a YouTube channel and provide a life for my daughter, all while creating stunning looks for my every day clients and guests in my chair. I’ve created hundreds of looks for my clients with color and extensions, and I am grateful every day for each and every one of them.
I’ve had many successes, and many more failures. I’ve made mistakes, but in the end, I’ve learned and grown from them.
In the end though, I love my life. I love the work / life balance I’ve created. I love the guests I get to see in my studio every day. I love the friends and family I’ve found in the local performance community. I’ve built the most amazing life that I am so grateful for and couldn’t be more proud of. I live to inspire the women around me and create a safe space for them to step into their power.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d definitely recommend an adventure with Backbone Adventures in Estes Park and spend a few hours riding ATVs and having fun outside in our beautiful Rocky Mountains. I’d take them for a meal at Betta Gumbo in Loveland or Melting Pot in Fort Collins. I’d have to take them to see a show at the family owned and operated Jesters Dinner Theatre in Longmont as well!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to recognize my mom, Dana Hitch.
She is the strongest, most enduring person I’ve ever met, and I would be nothing without her.
She deserves the whole world and inspires me daily.
