We had the good fortune of connecting with Jesse Ryan Crosby and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jesse Ryan, what matters most to you?
Compassion is a driving force in my life. I recently turned “Compassion is boundless,” into a sticker design; the text overlapping one of my film photographs. A small sentiment to leave with folks. Compassion carries us back to our humanity, over and over again. We never know what someone else may be experiencing in their personal life. Extending gentleness and kindness towards ourselves and others can go a long way. I have experienced and appreciated first hand, as I am sure we all have, how an act of kindness stretches our hearts wide open, reminding us how far we can go when we lean in. It is important to hold space for that.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I think one of the greatest things about being an artist is that, as individuals, we independently derive our source of creativity, and the drive to make the work that we do, from somewhere deep down; a calling, so to speak. My work spans a variety of mediums, including photographic media, large-scale painting, video art, and creative writing. Conceptually, my work rests between intersections of grief, and personal healing, exploring deep-seated themes of identity, gender, memory, moment, and place (re: belonging.)
It’s hard to feel that I set myself apart from others in any particular way; I think if anything, I am just leaning into the work that I do, as an extension of my lived experience. Folks describe my work as intimate and personal, and that’s just where I find myself; metaphorically speaking. I am constantly pouring myself into my work. I think if we as creatives continue to invest ourselves into our practice in authentic ways, we are right where we need to be.
I am most excited about the work I am making presently. I have never felt more personally connected to the work I do, on so many levels. As far as challenges go, I deal with my own set of mental health challenges, and waves of imposter syndrome; a commonality in the world of artists. Personally, I feel it creep up and blanket the spark in my minds eye from time to time. It’s hard to overcome those waves, because when you’re in the thick of it, it’s difficult to crawl out. I am fortunate to have a support system; my fiancé in particular, who is always there to hold space, extend her heart, and encourage me in bountiful ways.
What would I want the world to know about me? I am a proud nonbinary, trans* person, and I make a lot of work about it, especially in the thick of today’s social and political climate. Representation is a dire need for the queer community, in totality. Despite personal challenges, I am proud of where I’ve arrived, and to be a part of such a vibrant, expansive community of 2SLGBTQIA+ folks; to be living my truth, as who I am today. Remember, you know who you are better than anyone else. You are loved and valid for who you are. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Denver is such a vibrant city with something for everyone. As a sober person, I am not too shabby on breweries or bars with the best flights, but I know there are plentiful in the city (and a TON are queer friendly with NA drinks!) I am a big sucker for vegan food; my fiancé and I love to frequent Thai Pot Cafe and Wellness Sushi in Denver, the local galleries (Denver Art Museum), bookstore’s, the farmers market’s, explore the landscape, and the beautiful parks in the area. There’s always something going on!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I would like to dedicate this Shoutout to my PopPop. I would not be where I am today if it were not for his tremendously large heart, and his undying support, through and through. He is always there to lend an ear, and even better advice. His unconditional love, grace, and encouragement has been a divine blessing in my life. There are never enough ways to express my gratitude for everything my Grandfather has done for me, and all of the ways he continues to show up for me. I love you eternally, PopPop. Thank you for everything you have ever done for me, and all of the ways you continue to be the brightest beacon of light in my life.
