We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessi Burg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessi, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
There is so much more behind the scenes action that goes into each project that the clients never see. For instance, looking at pricing, you aren’t just paying for the materials and labor – it also includes all the planning, logistics of getting supplies to and from job sites, and the price of software subscriptions that help build the project on the back end. You’re not just buying the time of the job, you’re buying all of the time that goes into it. For example, driving, professional development, learning about new supplies in the industry – these are all necessary things happening in the background and cannot be automated.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Outgrow Your Garage is a bit of a wishlist business for me. When I started my first business in landscaping, I quickly found that there were many resources to help me start up and almost nothing to help me grow. So Outgrow Your Garage is everything I wish I had then, plus everything I learned along the way. The beginning of OYG started during the pandemic. My spouse and I started playing with the idea of moving out of Denver since the cost of living is outrageous, but moving the landscaping business would be a challenge. I wanted something that would allow me to travel more, and around this same time, people started asking my advice on how to grow their trades/service businesses. I started coaching on the side while running the landscaping business. Realizing that this side gig was the dream job I had been searching for, I decided to sell my landscaping company and turn Outgrow Your Garage into a full time business. Creating something that meets the needs of tiny business owners who also have to drive all over town for their jobs is extremely tough. I had to solve things like: is this programming accessible offline? From a phone? From a library computer? Can they do this from a job site or while waiting for a client meeting? Will this program I’m recommending work on both Android and iPhones, in an area that doesn’t have cell reception? Can these activities be easily understood by someone without a college degree or who doesn’t speak English as a first language? There’s so many factors that come into play with on the go learning, so we’re continually working on finding the best practices.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Favorite little known things in the Denver metro-area: Burns Pub in Broomfield is a great British style pub with an amazing whisky list, plus there’s celtic music on Saturday nights!
Molly Brown House – Yes, that Molly Brown. After she didn’t go down with the Titanic, she also ran for Colorado’s House of Representatives. Her house is near downtown, and it’s a pretty fun tour.
Westminster Hills Dog Park – This one is targeted towards dog owners or dog lovers! It’s a 600 acre off-leash park. My dog, Molly Brown, and I go there a couple times a month to run around.
Leopold Brothers tour and tasting room – I’m not sure if this is open yet, since the last time I went was pre-pandemic, but they have a really awesome setup and great spirits (the alcohol and employees!).
Butterfly Pavilion Yoga – Butterflies will actually land on you mid-pose!
Denver Library Main Branch Map Room – Ok, I’m showing my nerdiness here, but the map room in the Denver library has some super neat old maps of Colorado, and I’ve definitely used them to see how the railroads sprung up across the state. These old tracks also make a nice hike if you’re into that.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My staff is amazing and I wouldn’t be able to accomplish as much as I have in this business without their help. Taryn, my Operations Manager, keeps track of all the details of the business. Kelly, my Marketing Director, handles all of our tech and branding. Since we all have different skill sets, we’re able to work as a team so much more effectively than I could on my own.
