We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Billings and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
It’s a Billings’ family tradition that every year, we watch spooky movies the entire month of October. In preparation near the end of summer in 2022, we were making our list of movies and Jess requested more creature features “You know, like the Wendigo or El Chupacabra.” Our ever growing movie collection spawned a spooky discussion that spiraled.
Soon we were discussing what Halloween candies would be approved by the Jackalope (we think he’d like candy corn) or if the El Chupacabra counted as a vampire; if Pumpkin Spice wasn’t so “basic” what would it look like? We’ve wanted to start a spooky little company but have struggled to find the right fit… then it dawned on us. From the Mexican chocolate flavor that fit perfectly with El Chupacabra, we started writing out as many mythic creatures and matching what flavor fit them best.
After a flurry of mad scribblings (and a few squabblings) Mythic Coffee Company was born!
We recruited an AMAZING artist to bring our imaginings to life; honestly they’re better than we imagined – we just give a “vibe” and let them create. We only had one rule, no shipping (on US orders) and merchandise should be US sourced – so yes, some items cost a little more, but we think it’s worth it.
As we grow, we’re expanding our offerings and learning about all the mythical creatures out there!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Starting a business is HARD work. Especially with a toddler and both parents with full time jobs… but it was something that we wanted to pursue to ensure our own growth and financial futures. There are times when it feels like we have 3 full time jobs between our regular eight to five and then being parents and trying to devote any extra time to Mythic. But it is absolutely worthwhile when we go to events and hear people tell us that our coffee is the first one that they can drink without getting heartburn, or have people drive two hours to see us at an event, or order bags to ship to family overseas, or even have a superfan buy a bag to get a tattoo of the artwork! That is the kind of thing that makes it all worthwhile for us.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Colorado, and Denver especially, are full of so many options it would be impossible to show everything in a week! Being foodies, we would have to take people to our favorite places to eat; Dae Gee Korean BBQ, Hapa Sushi Grill, The Milk Market… the food scene in Colorado is the best in Denver and the surrounding areas!
Then for entertainment, people watching at Union Station, catching a Broncos, Rockies, Nuggets or Av’s game can’t be beat. As movie buffs, we love going to Alamo Drafthouse and catching their immersive shows (and the themed menus for whatever movie we’re seeing) and then going to Meow Wolf for an otherworldly experience.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to Shoutout everyone that’s helped us along the way! Our wonderful families that have supported us, from buying bags and sharing with their friends, to helping us watch our daughter when we’re at events. A special shoutout to our community in Colorado for helping us grow. And finally to our loyal superfans (you know who you are!) that are always recommending us to others and making sure our brand keeps expanding.
