We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Chariton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
The week I took the test for my real estate license, I also took another kind of test: A pregnancy test. I found out that I was pregnant with my fifth child that same week. That whole first year of being a realtor, I was pregnant and still raising my older four children. My husband was still fairly new in his career and working hard to take care of all of us. I remember telling myself that I would do just one thing each day to move my real estate business forward, and even if it was a small thing, I would count it as a success because I had so much going on with how I was feeling in my pregnancy and also trying to balance my family’s needs. I don’t think we can ever be perfectly balanced, but I believe that when we prioritize the most important things in life, like our family realtionships, the other things will fall into place, even if it may take longer than we think it should. But I think that because I have worked hard to build a business around my family’s lifestyle and put them first, I have been able to build the type of business that lasts and that I want to keep working on for the years ahead. Now that baby that I was pregnant with in my first year, and carted around all over town with me in my second year, is almost five. Doing at least one thing every day, has turned into quarterly client events and 20 million of real estate sold in a year. I feel grateful for my successes, but they are only sweet because I have my family with whom I celebrate. None of it would be any fun without them. Balance has adjusted to making sure I put my phone away when my kids are talking to me, always being home for dinner, and letting clients and fellow realtors know that I don’t work on Sunday.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

I started real estate as a solo agent in Pueblo County and quickly joined a team because i realized I wanted to grow and learn faster than I could on my own. The team relied on Zillow which I didn’t love running my life, but I did gain a lot of experience quickly. I stayed 6 months and then went solo. After building my business for two years, my husband had an opportunity we couldn’t pass up for his work in Chaffee County, so we moved two hours away. I was scared I wouldn’t be able to still do real estate in our new, and much smaller town, but I put a plan in place and went to work building. Within two years, my business caught up to, and then passed the success I had previously experienced in Pueblo County. It took a lot of work, but I felt our new area was so well-suited to us that I wanted to make it work, and I knew I wanted to keep doing real estate. At first I felt like I wasn’t taken seriously, but I took myself seriously and that changed things I think. When you take yourself and your own dreams seriously, other people can’t help but do it too.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
4 am get up and hike a nearby fourteener 11 am go soak at Mt. Princeton resort hot springs

4 pm take a float down the Arkansas river
7 pm dinner at Currents or Thai Sushi and an evening concert at Riverside Park

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband Nick deserves a shoutout because he has always supported my dreams and aspirations. He is a great cook and makes dinner for our family much better than I do. Our parenting really gets to be a partnership, and I wouldn’t want to do any of this without him.

My parents deserve a shoutout for making me believe I can be anything I want to be.

My administrative assistant and client care coordinator Trisha Arosemena and Buyer’s agent Elizabeth Saunders both keep our team running smoothly. I always feel lucky that they are who I get to work with each day.
