We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Clarke and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I struggled with cystic acne all through high school and college. I tried every antibiotic and prescribed cream, but it always came back. Fast forward to 2019 and my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer. He was the healthiest man I knew so I started to research different things. In my research, I started to learn about skincare ingredients and how different skin responds differently and what our skin needs. I was able to clear up my acne and keep it away through this process. Around this time, I gained a social media following and as cliche as it sounds, everyone was asking me about my skincare (haha). When the pandemic hit, the company I was working for was affected so I decided to go to esthetician school to be able to back up my knowledge. While in school, I fell in love with giving facials and really transforming the skin. Once I graduated, Just Skin Den just fell into place!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets my skincare apart is that I focus on the inside out. I want the ingredients in the products I carry to truly transform the skin while taking your lifestyle into consideration. Our skin shows on the surface what is going on inside of us so I want to make sure that we get to the root of the issue! My clients will glow from the inside out. Business-wise, my degree is in marketing with a minor in business and my dad and fiance are entrepreneurs. I’ve always been more business minded than anything so my education has been huge. Also, I think it’s important to not be afraid to ask for help. Seek expert’s advice as they are willing to give it, but make sure it is a mutual relationship and you are not taking advantage of someone else’s experience. The only way I have been able to overcome challenges is by seeking advice from people who have been there before. I actually just brought on a business coach who has been in the medspa industry for many years. Her expertise has already helped me refine my menu and has helped me to break my tasks up into manageable chunks.
I want the world to know that skincare is individualized. In an age where social media influencers thrive, don’t forget that you are your own person and only you know exactly what you need.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh boy! I would start at the Generous Coffee Shop in Golden, CO. It’s located in the Tributary Market right in downtown and is the cutest spot! From there, spending the day in Evergreen is my absolute favorite. There are a lot of manageable hikes and great restaurants so we would spend the day exploring. Ending the night downtown Denver at a favorite restaurant like AshKara, Mister Oso, or Izakaya Den. A nightcap at Forget Me Not (specifically an espresso martini) would really seal the deal. The following day, I’d go to breakfast at Snooze in Union Station and find my way to Tattered Cover Bookstore. If you are in a shopping mood, i’d visit Vert Beauty! Finally, you have to go see Red Rocks Amphitheater and if there is a concert one night, even better!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My fiance and family have been really supportive. They are all business minded and have helped me navigate the different challenges that come from starting from the ground up. The skincare companies Follain and ClearSTEM have also been mentors and helped support me in my education and promoting of my new business. Finally, my esthetician in Nashville (where I moved from) has been instrumental in inspiring me and giving me all of the advice I could possibly want. Her name is Kenzie Cammuse and she is owner of Nashville Skin Studio.
