We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Corsentino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The Achilles tendon to the success of my brand is the direction and mentorship from those ahead of me. However, the catalyst to getting there is intentionality. Without the INTENTION to ask for direction, mentorship, or advice–all of the support in the world would have fallen on deaf ears. Setting the intentions to my definition of success was step one (of an innumerable amount- but it was surely step one!).
I remember approaching the speedbumps of my previous business with a “fake it till ya make it” attitude. These were also the years in business that I could not seem to escape a certain threshold – like someone was holding an invisible barrier over my head. I was on the periphery of improved outcomes, but always landed short of my anticipations. In that season, I was oblivious to my intentions- I had goals, sure! But, I did not have an established process to achieve them. I just sort of blindly trusted that God would take me through the impenetrable ceiling—Until, I became intentional. Very very intentional.
Here’s what happened:
I replaced vague goals with measurable and realistic ones. I replaced my “guess I’ll wing it” mindset to “I will learn it efficiently enough to teach it well.” I took the name of every mentor that offered their expertise or advice and I called them (even those that didn’t offer- I asked). I shadowed the best, I observed the top and I asked A LOT of questions. Lastly, I replaced my “please let this happen, God” prayers into, “I trust You WILL do this, God. Thank You.” (The most important implementation).
Of course I am speaking for myself, but- wouldn’t ya know it! Things began to develop!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As an aesthetic nurse, you marry the worlds of science and art. There is a certain eye for what I do that not many left-brained thinkers have. A joke I tell my patients in my treatment room is, “Your injectables should not be detectable.” I honestly believe we are all beautifully made – and being able to complement our organic features to create a natural rejuvenation is truly where I excel. One of the greatest complements I have received is that I “hold the space” well for my patients/clients. I am passionate about education and follow-up, and supporting a non-judgmental space of comfort and comprehension. There is also a very special comradery that develops in my treatment room- I love learning the small details of not just my patients’ physical being, but their emotional and spiritual complexes, as well. My background in holistic health and alternative medicine provides a commendation to the aesthetic goals I facilitate. I harbor a genuine curiosity for everyone I meet- especially those in my chair.
The journey to becoming an aesthetic nurse and medspa owner was not a paved path- however, each chapter along the way was an obvious push toward the ultimate goal and present chapter. I began my undergraduate degree on a rodeo scholarship in southern Colorado. I was not certain what I wanted to study- I did, however, know that I wanted to continue my passion for rodeo.
After my associate’s degree, I traveled to Big Sur, California to pursue my passion in a slightly different direction of rodeo- as an equine sports massage therapist. Coming back to Colorado with that degree led to the peak of my curiosity toward the human aspect of alternative medicine. I obtained my holistic health degree and became a licensed massage therapist (for humans, too!).
In 2016, fresh after the Miss Rodeo Colorado 2017 Pageant, I interviewed and landed a job as a massage therapist at Orange Skye Spa. The owners were phenomenal role models and motivated me to further my career. I remember being so intrigued by the world of medical aesthetics. Outside of the world of agriculture, I had never known a concrete passion until I began studying aesthetics. I pursued my bachelor of science in nursing from Colorado State University-Pueblo.
Through all four years, I worked independently from my home as a massage therapist, (resulting in a large clientele). I set my specialty to aesthetic medicine – attending conferences, shadowing injectors, and obtaining all of the certifications I could while also fulfilling the clinical side of nursing. To open my aesthetic practice eventually- I worked as a Pre-Op and PACU nurse as well as a night shift nurse on a post-op floor.
In 2022, Orange Skye Spa- the same spa that brought me to Pueblo, CO, and molded my professional career, went on the market and the opportunity to purchase the practice that was so near and dear to my heart presented itself. By February 2023, my business license was approved and I began hiring a team.
Today, Orange Skye lives on vivaciously- with a team of estheticians, massage therapists, and of course – medical aesthetics offered by me. Leading our team, performing aesthetic medical treatments, providing patient education, and of course spending time with my horses have been the fuel to my fire this year.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you do not already know- Corsentino’s LOVE to party, host, plan events and enjoy a large gathering! Let’s say my best friend was coming into town to help plan a shindig! First and foremost is a non-negotiable stop at the Mane Brew Coffee on Santa Fe before making our rounds to gather goodies from (all LOCAL) vendors! We would need the support of caffeine before we hit the itinerary. Coffee in hand, I would introduce my gal pal to one of my favorite silversmiths, Jayme at JD Lazy S Silver Co! After our turquoise fix, we would place our order of yummy baked goodies from our multitalented vendor, also the owner of A Sweet Life Bake Shop. And– as long as we’re speaking in hypotheticals, our pal Jordyn, owner of Photography by Jordyn and The Upcycled Vaquera would have room on her books for a fun photoshoot to promote our party! You know what’s next- FLOWERS! A stop by Cocoa Bella Flower Co for the most beautiful arrangements and centerpieces to really pull our gathering together! Our favorites are dahlias and something new this year we are all excited for, a specialty perennial called Hypericum Berries! (Dare you to Google them and not fawn over how pretty)! Next, we’d tackle our outfits. One trip to town and a new wardrobe later, we would be leaving Downtown Farmgirl- maybe even with a new bag or three! We would entertain our guests with some cute permanent jewelry! The really neat thing about this? We have two amazing options! A quick drive north would land us at Timeless Creations Permanent Jewelry- or we could find Goldie’s Permanent Jewelry in Pueblo, CO. Both companies are owned by amazing women, and they are happy to “pop-up” at a party!
It is officially time to secure the CUTEST mobile bar around. We would call Jordyn with Rusted Bucket Party Rentals for the ultimate service from the “horse trailer bar” all of the guests will be talking about! You know we HAVE to order a custom entry table for our party- one with our brand on it and as many customized features as we can conceive. We would call Derek at Corsentino Welding and Fabrication for this (I might even get the wife discount here)!
To give our guests party favors- we have great options! Our first call would be to our gal, Kaylynn with Harper&Grey Clay for the most unique western styled clay earrings. For our horse guys and gals, we would order from one of our favorite small tack shops- Cowpoke Tack owned by the sweet Amanda Snider, for some hand tied halters of GREAT quality! How about custom T shirts for our gathering!? Soco Vinyl and More would be our next call! The owner, Jennifer Newsom is the one and only! Next would be an easy choice- a call to Hecht’s Wood & Metal Works for some custom bottle openers for our guests. While we would have, Mike, the owner on the line- we might as well custom order an engraved wooden sign for our party to hang by our new custom table for each guest to sign!
Before our party, we may need to freshen up our manicures at Meraki Nail Lounge, LLC. I would look forward to this one- as a nurse, I have not had a manicure in over 5 years! I see Maggi’s work on so many of our mutual clients- and friends, she’s an artist! Wrapping our errands up, a visit to Hue32 to our gal, Tiffany Corsentino to freshen up our hair! Now, on our way back home, a quick stop at one of our favorite local farms for our produce, fruits, and canned goodies at DiSanti Farm. You certainly buy more than you anticipate- it’s the unwritten rule, here!
It is a pure blessing to either know each of these owners personally or to have shopped their goods with phenomenal experiences. I am so fortunate to have grown in this little community!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh man! “Rain dances work 100% of the time. As long as you dance until it rains.” A quote that since hearing it, I have slapped it on every sticky note and doodle-appropriate area. Each of my mentors are strong models of successful rain dances. The examples of love and mentorship in my professional life are resounding. The illustration of support in my life owns the note to my brand! I will jump right in and name the names!
Lana Leonard, the predecessor to my current position, introduced me to aesthetic nursing and lit my flame! Lana has always been happy to share her expertise and guidance in this unique discipline. Lana lit this flame, and it has since been stoked by many:
Trina Shook RN, owner of Monumental MedSpa has been a wonderful mentor as I navigate this field- Always willing to educate and share her tips and tricks. Aside from her mentorship, she is the lady on the other end of any needle in MY face. I am also fortunate to work with a great group of medical professionals at Skyline Eye Surgery Center, where I find constant encouragement, support and network building! (They also keep me sharp on my nursing skills). I have also had the pleasure to learn from the one and only, Dr. Zamora, with Jack Zamora MD Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetics. My experiences there are game changing, a true blessing!
As far as direction outside of my room with needles (AKA the other 90% of life), I have been absolutely blessed to have the leadership and guidance of my friend and mentor, Courtney Hecht, owner of Cocoa Bella Flower Co, here in Pueblo, Colorado. Navigating the good and bad of business (and of life), leading a team, steering employees, clients, and the balance of it all has been made a feasible ride. Court is always happy to celebrate the wins, and offer the right words when she catches me carrying a blanket of defeat- and to my husband’s delight, has even attempted to teach me to cook. Get yourself a Court if you don’t have one!
Last, but certainly not least- My husband (who happens to be a pipeline welder—and wouldn’t know a skin care product if it literally landed on his face), has been full force, all gas and no brakes, blindly supporting me every step of the way. Sometimes, the REAL support your day needs is simply walking through the door and being handed a glass of wine and told the horses are fed and dinner is on. As cliché as it is, my husband and our faith are the real MVP of my brand.
Each of these contacts has laid the foundation of collaboration and community over competition—and have danced until rained.
