We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessie Belisle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It’s actually not a decision I took, it just happened. I started painting for myself, more than 10 years ago, because I couldn’t afford buying Art at the time. I made the first painting, and the second… And I just never stopped since!
I am still painting to this day because it makes me feel good. Simple as that. I don’t necessarily see it as a career to be honest. This is just what I do to stay mentally healthy! I’m just extremely grateful that some people enjoy my paintings, and are ready to commit to it, to be able to stare at it everyday in their house. It blows my mind every time.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My paintings navigate in different dimensions, exploring collective thoughts, the real and UNREAL. They exist in a place where vision is superfluous and intuition is my tool. I translate my energy piece by piece so that each work can have its own effect on my viewers. Translating my knowledge as a reiki master is absolutely fundamental for me. I am passionate about the power of colors, I am fascinated by the impact a piece will have after leaving the studio.
Being an artist is far from being easy. I can’t speak for everyone, but I feel like the hardest part is staying the most authentic possible, without letting people’s opinion affect your style. We live in a fast fashion world. Trends come and goes, but Art is timeless if made with the right intention. I also tend to be very colorful, and modern houses are washed out with white walls and grey furniture. I believe colors are extremely important for us, they stimulate many parts of the brain in such magical way… So not following the trends, and staying true to my own beliefs is definitely an everyday work.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In nature that’s for sure! As soon as me and my husband have a free weekend, we take our camper van in the mountains, and would definitely want to share that kind of experience with our loved ones. That said, we are both city people, and would have few good recommendations in the city.
Meow Wolf is such a unique experience, I believe everyone should go. No exception. This is the work of 300 creative peoples. They built a unique immersive experience for all ages. Me and my husband met at burning man in 2019, we are both very enthusiastic when it comes to interactive Art, and I feel lucky to have something as special as Meow Wolf in the city I live in.
I also really enjoy the first Fridays on Santa Fe. It’s diverse, there is food trucks everywhere, music and Art. What else do you need?!
I would definitely have dinner at Mister Oso on Larimer. It’s everything I like when it comes to go out and eat. It’s colorful, but cozy. It’s tasty and delicious, but not pretentious.
Want to go out and dance? Beacon hands down.
Shopping? Modern Nomad and Garage Sale Vintage are my favorites.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I moved to Denver from Montreal in 2020. It was a big transition in my life, and felt a bit lost a the beginning. I discovered the RIno Art District website, and found so many beautiful opportunities there! The neighborhood in general is extremely inspiring, with the murals everywhere… Big shoutout to the RIno Art District for making feel part of something, even after moving from Canada. I could participate in many group exhibits, fundraising, and discovered art studios that way also.
