We had the good fortune of connecting with Joel Silverstein and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joel, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The number one lesson my career and business(es) have had is that you have to take the risk in order to reap the reward. I haven’t had my billion dollar buyout (yet) but I’ve learned enough to know that I have to keep trying.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I tend to be very direct and look to build marketing strategies that maximize investment, and I have conviction in the strategies I out forward. That confidence has served me well when when seeking approval from leaders and clients. But, that hasn’t always been the case. If you’re not careful, conviction can look like arrogance. In order to bring people on board, I’ve had to involve my team — contemporaries, leaders and direct reports — early in the process of introducing a strategy. That way, everyone can own the achievement when the strategy results in success.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Given that I’ve just spent two months on the road in my overland-built truck, I would take said friend to the Peak 10 trail in Breckenridge, park at 13,000 feet and hike, albeit slowly, up to the peak near 14,000 feet. After a breathtaking (literally at altitude) day on the mountain, we’d come down to town and have a bison burger and a Breckenridge Bourbon at Blue Stag Saloon. Later we’d drive up near Webster Pass and find a place to pop our rooftop tents for the evening. The next day perhaps we’d stop by Slee Offroad in Golden before heading into Denver to help another overlander put in a new alternator in their Land Cruiser before beers and our choice of delectable vendors at Edgewater Public Market or one of the other half dozen food halls in town.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my cohort of students, professors and staff at the Tufts University Fletcher School’s Masters in Global Business Administration, with whom I managed to expand my universe during a global pandemic, and gain an entire network of colleagues with whom I can discuss ideas and collaborate.
