We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey and Martha Delmore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joey and Martha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Joey started an outdoor play equipment company specializing in high-quality products that facilitate play, movement, and connection with exceptional customer care in 2010. His primary products were AlleyOOP trampolines—the safest, highest-performing, and longest lasting trampolines on the market—and redwood play sets. Joey spent years looking for a piece of equipment versatile enough to provide bounce and rebound for rough and tumble play at home and outdoors, and with people on their adventures. Despite years of research, he could not find anything that had both the durability and quality to provide the versatility he was looking for.
In 2020, after years of paddleboarding, Joey discovered white water river SUPs, and purchased a local Colorado man’s river stand up paddleboard, SOL. After his first river adventure on the board, he came home and declared that this was the quality he was looking for–a product designed to be outside, durable enough to handle nature’s elements, and with an excellent warranty. He started a conversation with the creator of SOL about manufacturing and creating a new product, and began the design process for what would become the Outdoor AirTraX Adventure Board™.
Martha is an educator with the knowledge and experience that play is foundational for learning, growing, and processing. She remains a student of early childhood development and human psychology. They have two children, one with Sensory Processing Disorder. With a deep commitment to celebrating the way each person’s brain works, rather than attempting to mold it into the arbitrary confines society creates, they worked hard to build the ultimate backyard and adventure accessory. Combining their knowledge and experience of outdoor play equipment and childhood development with their love of the outdoors, the Adventure Board™ was born.
The Adventure Board™ by Outdoor AirTraX was exactly the product Joey had been looking for, and that Martha knew would be such an important asset to families, teens, and adventurers. It blends the rugged durability of a river stand up paddle board with the bounce and rebound of an air track. The result is a multi-purpose, four-season, all-terrain Adventure Board™ with unparalleled versatility and durability, and endless potential.
What should our readers know about your business?
We are really proud to have created a multi-use product with such significant versatility and durability. We believe there are tremendous benefits of play and creativity, and that the connection and collaboration that come from it can be world-changing. There are few other products that can be used year-round and in as many ways and places as the Adventure Board™, and that facilitate as much collaboration and creativity as it does.
Much to our surprise, the process of creating the Adventure Board™ was the “easy” part. We have learned a tremendous amount about what goes into each product we buy, from user manuals to warnings, liability insurance to marketing and sales. While there have been countless late nights, our commitment and willingness to grow and learn in all areas of life has made this journey more enjoyable–knowing there isn’t some final arrival, but that the destination is in the journey itself. We continue to be reminded and humbled by the gift of connections with others, as friends and other professionals share their advice, knowledge, and skills.
From there, we would head to Fruita where we would spend a day biking at 18 Road and Kokapelli, eating dinner at Hot Tomato and snagging coffee from Bestslope (for Joey) and Aspen St (for Martha) on our way out the next morning. We would spend a few days in Salida and Buena Vista, hiking, biking, and playing on the water, and maybe pop up to O’Haver Lake for an afternoon. The people who live in these mountain towns are so often living their dreams–doing what fills their souls in the places they find inspiring and have a deep gratitude for. Being in those spaces and around adventurers, creators, and people who love to play always leaves us with abs that hurt from laughter, hearts that swell from the connection, and bodies that are tired in the best kind of Rocky Mountain way. When we got back to Denver, we would head downtown for the last afternoon. We’d get dinner from Cuba Cuba and walk around downtown, listening to the musicians and soaking up the creativity that abounds.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A special thanks to treasured friend and graphic designer/creative director extraordinaire, Janae of Janae Newman Design, LLC, who was invaluable in breathing life into the design of the logo and branding of the Adventure Board™ and offering sound business advice during the process.
A shoutout to Johnny of Sol Paddleboards as well. Creating a product with so much integrity and such high quality, and his willingness to share his contacts and resources were foundational in the startup of the Adventure Board™. Thank you, Johnny!
