We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnny Hastings and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnny, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a musician specializing in blues music, starting my own business as a performing artist was a natural progression in my career. It stems from my passion for music. Booking my own shows and promoting myself was a way to further pursue this passion and create opportunities for myself in the music world. My mother is a music teacher of forty plus years, she made a living with her passion for music by teaching it. I knew I had her same passion but needed to figure out how I could make a living using my strengths. I’ve found performing to be much more enjoyable than teaching. Overall, starting my own business as a musician was a way to pursue my passion for music on my own terms, while also opening up new opportunities for creative expression and professional growth.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others is my deep-rooted connection to the blues tradition and my commitment to authenticity in my music. Growing up immersed in the sounds of Eric Clapton, Stevie ray Vaughan, and B.B. King, I’ve developed a deep understanding of the genre’s history, its pioneers, and its nuances. I strive to honor that legacy while also infusing my own voice and experiences into my music, creating a blend of tradition and innovation that resonates with audiences.
One thing I’m particularly proud of is my ability to connect with listeners on a visceral level. The blues is all about tapping into raw emotions, and I take pride in my ability to evoke those feelings through my music. Whether it’s joy, sorrow, longing, or defiance, I aim to create a cathartic experience for my audience that leaves them feeling moved and uplifted.
My journey to where I am today professionally has been anything but easy. Like many artists, I’ve faced numerous challenges along the way, from financial struggles to self-doubt to navigating the complexities of the music industry. But through perseverance, resilience, and a whole lot of grit, I’ve managed to overcome those obstacles and carve out a space for myself in the industry.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way is the importance of staying true to myself and my artistic vision. In a world that’s constantly changing and evolving, it can be tempting to chase trends or compromise your integrity for commercial success. But I’ve found that the most fulfilling path is one that allows me to be authentic and true to my roots.
Ultimately, what I want the world to know about me is that I’m more than just a musician – I’m a storyteller, a healer, and a keeper of the blues flame. My music is a reflection of my lived experiences, my struggles, and my triumphs, and I hope that it resonates with listeners in a meaningful way. Whether you’re a lifelong blues aficionado or someone who’s just discovering the genre for the first time, I invite you to join me on this journey and experience the transformative power of the blues.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you’ve never been to the Black Hills I highly recommend you take a little road trip and come see all that this area has to offer. We’ve got Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse monuments which are great to visit, then hit the scenic byways and see the incredible views. Cruise over to Custer State Park and see a buffalo. Then catch a show at the Custer Beacon. The Beacon is my favorite venue in the hills. Great people, music, and food. If you’re in Rapid City you’ll be able to find great music and dinning experiences downtown.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to my mother, Kandy Hastings. I don’t think I’m alone in this shoutout because she has taught thousands of kids in her career. From introducing me to music like, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Cream, and Buddy Guy to giving me my first guitar lesson on “The House of the Rising Sun”, she has been a huge mentor and supporter of my music my whole life. Also all of my teachers from LA College of Music, and many other teachers I’ve had over the years.
