We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonny & Vanessa Kupin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonny & Vanessa, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
After a few years working as baristas at local coffee shops, we fell in love with the art, science, and comm behind coffee. We began dreaming of a place to express our creativity. Selah Coffee Co was birthed out of a desire to bring good coffee to places that don’t usually have it. Whether it’s an office building, a school, or a store, we wanted to be able to bring the experience of a coffee shop to people. Selah Coffee Co. is a specialty coffee cart with a full espresso bar. We provide coffee catering for various events, and proudly serve Sonder Coffee, a local roaster In Denver.
What should our readers know about your business?
The Selah Coffee Co journey started as a dream in 2021. After getting married, we were determined to build and achieve together as first generation Americans. It was an effort to cultivate a community and a true experience in any event or gathering. Our vision is based off of the Hebrew definition of Selah- to Pause, Reflect, and Celebrate life through coffee. We want to Invite and facilitate people into a Selah moment and atmosphere whatever the occasion is through a specialty coffee cart.
We’d say starting this business has been a dream come true. We get to do what we love together and meet so many amazing people all over the denver area. Sure, there were challenges with the details of starting a small business and making sure we’ll run smoothy, but after a lot of research and help from coffee shop owner friends, we love it!
Along our journey, we’ve learned how much help you can offer with your knowledge. We had to talk to so many people, coffee shop and coffee cart owners, to get their opinions and suggestions. It was such a huge help to be able to learn from other people. Now, we really value helping other coffee cart owners, or people who dream of starting one one day. Helping others with what you know is so huge, we’re so thankful to all of the people that helped us start this cart.
Selah Coffee Co. is such a different business model than the traditional coffee shop- because we’re on wheels. We love that we get to make craft coffee, meet cool people and other businesses, and work together as a husband and wife duo!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ooo, well first- we’d take them to get coffee of course! Sonder Coffee and Jubilee Coffee are our GO-TO’S! They both create such a welcoming atmosphere, while perfecting the craft of coffee!
We would then grab breakfast at Stowaway Kitchen- the best breakfast spot in Denver, in our opinion. Their menu is always changing and they’re always creative with how they present their food- it’s just so good!
Then, we have to go to the mountains. We love exploring Boulder, Chautauqua Park, and hiking the Flat Irons!
Ice cream at Little Mans or Sweet Cow is always a hit. Their seasonal menus are always delicious.
We love Denver!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We credit the coffee shops that taught us everything we know. Vanessa worked at Circuit Coffee in Westfield, Massachusetts before moving to Denver. Circuit Coffee’s owner Ted Dobek, took Vanessa under his wing and taught her everything she knows about coffee. From the science of coffee extraction, to latte art and customer service, He taught her it all. Jonny worked at Sonder Coffee in Denver, Colorado and owners Julia & Ernest Minay, and Pop were there to teach him all of the science and craft behind coffee. We’re so thankful for these owners that took the time and energy to teach us, and then help us along the way of creating our coffee cart business.
