We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Allison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, how do you think about risk?
Risk is a great question. I have a little bit different perspective then most, and it has played a huge role in my life. I started rock and ice climbing at a very young age and eventually pursued it to almost a professional level. With ice climbing, the risk is very high, especially at an elite level. The consequences can absolutely mean death, and same in the fire service. That has played a large role in my business where risk is financial, so I was kind of all in. I really don’t get too afraid ever. I feel like risk is more just discomfort that I need to overcome and succeed at all cost.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business provides aerial photography and videography, with a large interior real estate component . We do a fair amount of business marketing as well. With the real estate boom the last two or three years, I would have to say that real estate photography is my primary income. There have been many challenges getting to where we are today, mainly financial and learning bumps in the road. When it came to real estate, I found out very quickly that most people don’t want to hire just a drone photographer for a project, which meant that I had to learn how to use a regular camera. I spent a lot of time doing free work to fine tune the skills. I think the main lesson I learned was to buy the right equipment the first time. In the early days, I tried to cut a lot of corners, which ended up costing more when I had to purchase everything two or three times.
I’m not sure there is anything that sets us apart from the others. We do strive to do the best work we can at the lowest prices we can. Hopefully some day, we can grow the business to be the main one in our valley.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in western Colorado in a resort town, there are many fun things to do in the winter. I would have to say ice climbing and skiing at our local resort, Sunlight Mountain. During the summer months, we have some great mountain biking spots. We also have great hiking and rock climbing areas, and we love to go camping whenever we can. We have a few different hot springs and an adventure park on the mountain for people who enjoy that kind of thing. I’ve been so busy with work and the new business that I don’t really know any of the “hang out” spots, but we do have a lot of restaurants with a great beer selection. We also have have a lot of good places to eat, but my favorites are Rocky mountain Pizza and a little shop called Slope & Hach, which are actually owned by our good neighbors.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family at home and in the firehouse are the ones I want to thank most. I would also like to thank the offices and realtors that took a chance with me while I was getting started; Property Professionals, The Property Shop, and Kehaulani Rust at Sotheby’s realty.
