We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Berger and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I find it to be fulfilling to build the future I want to see and I have always wanted to build my own business. My parents are both entrepreneurs so I grew up with that example in my life. The highs can be very high and the lows can be incredibly challenging. What I do know is that I am the person I am today because of those challenges. Through experiences and conversations, I realized I have a birds eye view of how businesses work because of my unique background. This skill lends itself primarily to being a consultant. I only want my clients to win so my feedback and recommendations are always based in that desire. What I am building is centered around helping my clients meet their business potential and that is the best feeling.

What should our readers know about your business?
The journey to get to where I am now has felt messy and chaotic for most of the time. I have always struggled to identify how my skillsets are best packaged or valued. I have had such specific and unique experiences that made it hard to translate them into the professional world. What I have always done, however, is to follow my curiosity. It led me into user experience design and then building ecommerce sites and then conversion rate optimization and then to ecommerce growth strategy.

What I love most about the world of ecommerce is the complexity. It’s a very nuanced and detailed ecosystem where there are so many individual pieces, all of which affect the whole. One of the biggest challenges is how to translate the ecommerce brand into all of those individual pieces, or as many as possible. What I am so committed to in my work is helping clients identify their vision and then translate it into very tactical day to day terms. When day to day operations support the brand and the vision, that’s where the company builds the most brand equity and build the strongest connections with their audience.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First and foremost, we would tour coffee shops in the area. I have kept track of every coffee shop I have been to in my life and have an extensive list of shops I want to visit in every major city in the US. The trip, however long it is, would involve coffee, pastries, and local restaurants. In my experience, those three places often provide a representation of the local culture and I really love that. And then it would be fun to explore what the city is best known for and see pieces of the world the locals see every day. To be able to explore places and experience local coffee, food, experiences, and culture seems really great. It would be a balance of activity and rest.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have learned I think about a million different pieces about life or situations and I need to externalize them to organize them. This looks like journaling, talking with friends, and going to therapy. All of them help me in different ways to see the big picture so I don’t drown in the details. It’s very valuable to have people in our lives who can reflect back what they see because it builds awareness for us and can lead to very helpful perspectives we would not have known otherwise.
