We had the good fortune of connecting with Julianna Rangel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julianna, what inspires you?
I am simply inspired by my family, the struggles they’ve overcome and the things they did to get me to where I am today is my biggest inspiration of all. They push me to be my best even when i’ve had doubts and they have opened doors for me that have led to my success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I was a sophomore in high school I was in an elective art class and my art teacher made an announcement that if anyone was interested in photography to let her know because she would be pulling us out of art assignments to teach us the basics of a camera. Being the silly teenager I was, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to use this to get out of doing my art projects but had no idea that it would turn into something that I would be doing professionally. She put me in an AP Photography class my Junior year of high school and my love for taking photos only grew through that class. My junior and Senior year I started taking volunteer models and doing their senior portraits for free, it was a win win where they would get free photos and I would get practice which eventually turned into small gigs for me. My freshman year of college I was studying business not thinking it was realistic to be an artist full time, I thought I had to have a background in business in order to be successful but I had such a passion for photography and I was craving to learn more about it, I didn’t want to be a business student, I wanted to be an art student. My biggest fear was telling my parents that I wanted to switch my major from the college of business to the college of visual arts and design, I feared that they thought I wouldn’t be able make a career of this and that I would fall into the stereotype of the “starving artist”. I presented them with a clear argument on why I would thrive more in art school rather than being a business major and to my surprise I had their full support and they only helped push me from there. I am now a senior at the University of North Texas and will finish my degree in photography with a minor in Art History in December. Through the years of taking photos i’ve fallen in love with portraits and making people feel beautiful. My biggest goal though my photography is to make people feel their absolute best and their reactions to their photos make it all clear that thats why I love doing what I do. I feel like a portrait can say a lot about a person, I love capturing the beauty that radiates off of people, I want them to feel comfortable in front of my camera and depending on the project i’m working on I love to capture what they do, what they love, and their very special moments.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend was visiting me in Denton, Texas I would most definitely take them to the Denton square. We would go get some breakfast as one of the many little donut shops here, my favorite is denton donut shop, and we would spend each day going to little spots in the square such the the opera house book store and the downtown mini mall, Norman Roscoe, Palm Tree Boutique, Free Play, and the little Lego Store. When we get hungry for lunch or dinner we could eat at Barley and Board, LSA Burger, Loop Hole, get coffee at West Oak Coffee, or go to brunch as Seven Mile cafe. For our midnight cravings we would have to stop by Amy’s donuts which is 24 hours, on the way to bucees, or for a sweet street or pizza we would make our way to Fry street for Insomnia Cookies or Zalat Pizza.
