We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Youngk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Regarding the things I’m passionate about risk taking, or lack thereof, has always told me if I’ve done right by myself or fell short.
Admittedly, I probably think about the risks involved in doing x,y, or z a bit too much. But risk taking has been a northern star when it comes to personal growth. Most notably making a weekly routine of attending/performing at open mics. I’m pretty introverted, so becoming a part of the Ft. Collins open mic community has been extremely inspiring and motivating. And I’ve met some of my closest friends there.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well, from what I’ve heard my warbling singing sets me apart from others. But I’m most proud of where I’m at in life currently. I feel I’ve found some of the main ingredients that, for me, make for a good life. So I’m excited to keep at it: writing music, performing, recording, and the endless practice having some patience with myself.
In regards to music, I wouldn’t call myself a professional. But I take writing and practicing seriously. It’s been exciting to play through all the music I’ve written over the years and hear the changes–the growth. It’s nice to see what it is I’ve had to say and how that’s changed over the years. And no, it’s not been easy, but it’s been absolutely worth it! The doldrums in creativity do end and give way to some cathartic creative moments. And I’ve found it’s a matter of persistence and valuing your own taste enough to write what it is you feel you have to write. And some of it will really blow and some of it won’t. But how cool to allow yourself that space to be you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh man well we’d have to do some of the Colorado defaults, assuming it’s summer when they’d be visiting: a hike, hot spring, followed by a burger at Debbie’s drive-in in Granby. That would at least cover the specifics for one day. I’d probably beat that formula to death though and just swap out the restaurant. Grab a beer and food and New Belgium, maybe check out Trve Brewing one day, and Star of India’s lunch buffet on another. We’d also have to pop into The Foxden Cafe for coffee and their open mic. And definitely the Lyric for their outdoor open mic. Hopefully this particular best friend sings or somethin…
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Richard Naviasky and the many friends I’ve made within the Fort Collins open mic community. Everyone I’ve met playing out at the various open mics has been kind and supportive of one another. And Mr. Naviasky is himself just one of those people that radiates a joy for life and what it is to nurture our creative side unapologetically.
