We had the good fortune of connecting with Kam Fletcher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kam, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As everyone knows, Covid gave us all a lot of time to think, reset our priorities, our goals and what matters in our lives. I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to continue my other part-time teaching job, and all my friends kept telling me to sell my sourdough bread. I love making bread but couldn’t imagine spending all my time in a kitchen by myself. I wanted to share how to make sourdough bread and all the other scrumptious baked goods that can be made with the starter. I’ve always been a teacher in one form or another, so what’s more natural than sharing my passion with others.
I’ve been making everything sourdough for six years and find that your average home baker thinks that making one’s own bread is too overwhelming, time-consuming and just plain scary, especially when it comes to maintaining the starter. There are so many sourdough bakers out there who have so much more experience than I do who have helped me figure out a simpler way to provide family or friends with good healthy bread with just a bit of planning.
My son Dylan Fletcher, who is a professional baker and chef, taught me how to make bread, and continues to teach me. The rest of my family helps with social marketing, finances and encouragement. Why wouldn’t I start the Haphazard Sourdough Baker Classes and Birthday parties?
Why do I call myself the Haphazard Sourdough Baker? Because I’ve made so many mistakes, but my two basic recipes are so simple that I can continue to blow it, even in my classes, and the bread tastes amazing.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others? One thing is my 40 years of teaching in numerous capacities with adults as well as children. Most people wouldn’t start a new career at my age yet I think the timing is perfect because of my age and experience. I also have experience in sales and old-school face-to-face marketing. Relationships and community are key to my business. Covid made that a bit difficult, but when I’m not baking or teaching, I’m out meeting new people to share my passion with. As I said, I want people to be excited about making healthy Sourdough Bread for their family and friends and sharing their experience with others.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is fun. If they landed in Colorado Springs I’d take them to Old Colorado City to La Baguette for breakfast. We’d then take a hike in Garden of the God’s. For dinner we’d go the the best pizza outside of Italy, Pizza Rustica. The next day we’d drive to Breckenridge and go cycling from Breck to Frisco and back. Day 3 we’d go to Vail for a bit more relaxation. Ok we’d probably play disc golf on the mountain. On to Denver to go to the Botanical Gardens, dinner at Bigsby’s Follies and exploring the Rino District. The next day off to Boulder for more hiking or cycling. Lastly a concert at Red Rocks. I love this State!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to recognize 2 people. The first is my son Dylan Fletcher, the professional chef and Baker who taught me, and continues to teach me how to make Sourdough everything. Second is Rob Carroll, who is my son-in-law and the founder of CV Kreative Marketing, (cvkreative.com) He has helped me with everything marketing and social media.
