We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamal Howard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kamal, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

Hi there! While in college, I began to cook more than eat out to save money. Eventually, the dishes I made were a hit for my friends and they started making special requests. I realized that my food was not only delicious to me, other people really enjoyed it too. I started Kamal’s Kuisine to bring a little extra revenue while I was doing an unpaid internship to finish my college degree. My weekend customers gave me great feedback and before I knew it, word of mouth led to pop up shop and catering events that rendered rave reviews. It is so rewarding seeing people’s face light up as they taste my food and I enjoy the honor of contributing to the success of gatherings and celebrations!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a private chef/caterer with southern roots that specializes in many types of cuisine. I take my time with my cooking to ensure a meal that tastes like home cooking and will make your taste buds dance. There are no short cuts in my kitchen which really reflects in the dishes that I make. Once you taste my food you’ll for sure be back for more. I’m very excited to bring my skills to anyones table, party, or event. I love to see all smiles when someone taste the food and hear the silence as they enjoy it, that is what keeps me going. I got to where I’m at just by staying consistent with selling weekly plates and eventually doing catering events that have the party rocking. I wouldn’t say that it has been easy but I love doing what I do so it makes it all worth while. Coming up with a menu every week comes with some sort of artist block and it can be difficult to keep motivation when figuring out what to cook. Just having a little discipline and doing some research always helps to overcome those setbacks. Once I do figure it out, it’s pretty fun to use my creativity putting dishes together.

Some lessons I’ve learned are to stay prayerful, and with Gods help just keep going no matter how you’re feeling. You may be tired, unmotivated, or lost but pushing through it will always reap a reward. Even though it may seem like it is slow for a couple weeks doesn’t mean that this is how it always will be.
I want the world to know that I am naturally talented in the kitchen and when you have the opportunity to enjoy the food that I prepare you will experience my gift from the first to the last taste of the dishes that I prepare. It will make you feel at home, happy and ready for more.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Being from Colorado, there is a lot to do and the city life is really growing. I am a huge supporter of black owned businesses, so we would have to start out in Denver and eat at TK’s Surf & Turf and then go for drinks at Viewhouse Ballpark. If there are sports in season, we would have to catch a game. During that week I would take them to the mountains to see the beautiful scenery and do a few outdoor activities up there. There are so many people from different parts of the country that live in Denver now so just being out and about will give us a chance to meet people, see a lot of fun and interesting things.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

My inspiration for selling plates came from my friend DeAndre Smith (aka Chef Cool Dre). He was selling delicious plates to college students at the school I was attending and I thought that was such a great idea. He’s also guided me and given me many tips as a mentor when it comes to catering events. The biggest shout out I would like to give goes to my mother. She’s my greatest supporter and somewhat my sous chef. She is the one always helping out when I need it the most. Many of my Kuisine ideas come from her inspiration, I wouldn’t be able to do it with out her. In addition to my amazing mom, my entire family is always very supportive and they are the ones I learned to cook from. The gift of preparing delicious Kuisine runs deep, from my grandmothers, to my grandfather, my mom, dad and aunties, all have incredible skills in the kitchen that inspire my dishes. Seeing everyone cook and enjoying family dinners and celebrations since childhood, instilled something in me that has cultivated my drive to be an excellent chef and I am very grateful for that. My goal is to continue the legacy of love and unity that delicious home cooked food has provided to me and my family for many years to come.
